So great!! I read the article and a bunch of others they recommended before my DL sesh and it got me super stoked! Loved it.

Glad you ladies liked it!

Deb has a thing for groundskeeper Willie. “Grease me up woman!”

I need a gym-tervention!! I need a gym-tervention!! I need a gym-tervention STAT!

As some of you know I’m currently going balls out on my pullups trying to get my 10 consecutive by 2011 and I shit you not, I’m putting on size through the shoulders and lats that is NOT equal to the rest of my body (slim in the hips, why God WHY?!)

I always value performance over aesthetics (altho I tip my hat to those who are physique oriented, as really we all are in the end) but I’m starting to lose sight of my goal for the sake of vanity! Of course I want to look and feel good, but i want those freaking pullups!!

And what’s worse, I’m questioning my methodology - pullup pyramid, 10 sets, weighted pullups…too much? Could I have gone about this differently? Maybe I should just put on MORE SIZE on my legs and ass to even things out? Maybe I should drop the rest of my upper workout for now?

Sigh. Thanks for listening, ladies.

ps. If i don’t get these fucking 10 pullups there will be hell to pay!

My advice, FWIW, is to go balls out to get your 10 pullups and then re-evaluate.

BTW, shoulder and lats will make your waist look smaller and will balance with your impressive butt / leg development. This is the so-called “X” shape that people strive for. The fact is that you are compact in stature so any muscle you add will be more noticeable.

From a pure aesthetic viewpoint there are a few things that throw things off balance…arms the are too big compared to shoulders, traps that are too big relative to shoulders and lats, hamstrings that don’t balance with glute / quad development, calves that don’t match upper leg and arm development. I don’t think you have any of these issues.

Short-term, you can just focus on chinups / pullups to hit your goal. Long term, just doing that movement will likely throw off the aesthetics…if that matters.

Yes that matters!! Thanks, Git! I was really looking for that proverbial smack on the ass and someone to just tell me to STFU and go after the goal. So thanks!

I don’t know shit about BBing aside from what’s common sense, so as long as any sort of aesthetic imbalances can be rectified after I smash those 10 pullups, then I’m happy

Ahhh…I feel so much better now. So here’s to hoping that I come back in 1 months with, “mkay, so how do i put on 2 inches to my quads and another 5 on my ass?”

Go get your goal! We’ll fix your quasimodo body after
Big quads and muscley asses for the win!

Oh Maschy, it’s like you’re in my head. I just posted in my log about how I’m feeling like my legs are getting massive, and maybe single leg squats aren’t really a goal I want as a result. I clearly don’t know.

I’m slim through the hips too and with a back like a barn door from the pullups–you should see me trying to buy and wear a suit. Not good!

Sometimes my back freaks me out. Not long ago lying in bed with my husband, I asked, “Have you looked at my back lately? It’s huge.” With his hand, he traced the contours of my muscles shaped as they have been by a river of persitence and effort, “No, I don’t see that,” he said.

Lesson learned: A strong back is beautiful–even when it makes you look top heavy.

Have you felt the power in your back yet? Sometimes when I’m doing pullups they are effortless, and I feel like I can pull my head straight through the ceiling. I’m busting out of my suit jackets because I’m strong. And strong feels good. I don’t like feeling/looking like the Incredible Hulk, but then again I DO! Dangling perilously from a rope or from the edge of a rocky cliff–I don’t need to be saved. F-Off gravity. My imagination may be a little over-active, but still, being able to do pullups seems like an important life skill.

Pullups are hard. I have always trained them only 1x a week. Using that method I can add about a pullup a month to my total. Can you get to 10 by the end of the year? I think you can? How? I’m not sure. Just keep training. You’ll get them. And that’s all that matters. Set a goal. And keep after it.

PS You’re beautiful. Stop worrying.

I’ve seen your Gregron-like pullup pyramids. You already have six. Ten won’t make your lats explode. And as someone who has struggled with poor lat activation, I say build the mind-muscle connection. You can always back off later if you think the lat area is too large, but you’ll always have the lat activation.

Nadia told me once that she had to fight for every single one. I was thinking they would be like running. If you can run 3 miles, you can run 6. If you can run 6 miles, you can run 10. I’ll echo Nadia on that, mine haven’t developed like that. Print told me to do high volume, but not sets where you go to exhaustion. That means lots of sets of 3 for me. LOL! If I do 5, then I’m done, completely burnt. Max effort.

I’d put money on your back not actually being as big as you feel

My back and arms feel huge lately as I’m doing more stuff that is making me feel them more but they’re not really growing much if I measure or take a pic.

Don’t worry!

Like Nadia was saying, guys don’t notice the things we do. We may notice the belly and the cellulite, etc, but unless you point it out, all guys see are curves and soft skin covering muscle. Just something I’ve noted about the guys I work with and compete with

So go after those pullups!

Masch: Stopping in one more time to say–I’m sure you’ve got those 10 pullups by the end of the year. You did a ladder with 2 sets of 6, which means your max right now is at least 8. Don’t say you can’t do 8. You can if you deload the pullups before taking a max effort attempt. You have a month to train, which will earn you at least 1 more pullup. Cut a pound or 2 and voila–you’ve got 10.

Ok Yonkey has me thinking about belts now…what kind do you guys all have? Are there specific ones for women since our torsos are typically shorter, or is a belt a belt a belt? (I’m over thinking this, yes)

And Masch-x500 what everyone else said. You own those pull ups!! OWN.THEM!

Nadia, thank you mama. What you wrote means everything to me, and such a beautiful image. I’ve had you in the back of mind the minute I took on this challenge. Not only because you’re the pullup goddess, but also because I know they way you push and challenge yourself, and its something I’ve always admired.

And thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely take that advice.

And to the rest of you wonderful ladies - thank you so much!! I needed that perspective and support. Lit a fire under my ass for sure! This is why I love PW!

Those pullups are mine!!

masch, I don’t remember if you posted your measurements and I can’t find them on your log. I’ve never had any complaints about lat size when I take my clothes off, as they just make me look X-shaped, (like superhero) even though my hips are quite slim too. You are a bonofide superhero!

Pffft I would kill for narrow hips. I would. My pelvis is not only wide, but it’s tall, so even with my wide back, it dominates my torso and totally spoils my aesthetics. No amount of dieting can fix that. I’m not X-shaped, I look like a double bass.

I am quite pleased with my wide-ish hips. even though they don’t look wide comparably to my WIDE waist. Better center of gravity is fine with me.

If we’re getting instrumental, I’m shaped like a recorder–widled out of wood :{ by a four year old.

:D!

I just wanted to share that I’m spooning Nutella straight from the jar to my mouth as I type this…
