Q & A, PW Style

agreed

Saw this on TV yesterday and thought that it was pretty interesting.

Synopsis: (please excuse the MTVness of this and the hilarious line re: BPing a friend, which half you bitches already do!)

What if you were so big that you needed a special scale just to weigh yourself? But so strong you could bench press a friend without breaking a sweat.

On this episode of True Life, you’ll meet 370 pound strong woman, Holley Mangold. A former high school football lineman make that line woman who’s literally living large while going for Olympic gold. While older brother Nick suits up on Sundays with the New York Jets, Holley has hung up her helmet, picked up the barbell and in a very short time emerged as one of the USA’s top women lift weightlifters.

Anyways, I just found it nice to see a “big girl” not only accept her size, but really own it. I think we discussed the whole “can you be overweight and healthy/athletic” in a different thread a while back, so this might add some more fuel for thought. Either way, its nice to see athleticism in its various forms. Know no boundaries!

:frowning:

I can’t see it because I’m outside the US.

I found this a while back.

Apologies that it is sponsored by a supermarket chain so there is some bullshit about halfway through. In an interview she said if there was one thing she could change about the sport of weightlifting it would be for there to be an additional weightclass for women. She wasn’t happy bulking as hard as she could to compete against the superheavy weights (over 75kg)… But she had to cut to more than she was happy with (her family said she looked skinny lolz and… I can kinda see that, actually) in order to get into the under 75kg.

Maschy nice picture! Look at the development! So strong and healthy. And nice that you’re appreciating what your upper body can do.

Nadia - your arms and back and shoulders look fantastic and still very feminine. My husband just took some pics of me this summer and when I’m relaxed, it’s hard to tell I lift in most of them. So much for getting all manly. LOL!

I’ve been thinking about this thread and it’s nice that it’s become a place for us to talk. And Oroboro’s vid and some of the pics are really inspiring.

I’m wondering how to best communicate some of the lifting basics for women. Maybe PW should be like the beginner’s forum with a thread or two that remain at the top of the page as sort of an introduction? They could addresses some of the most asked questions. I just read this brief article which gives some of the science to why women don’t put on “bulk” like the men. This sort of thing could be a place to start. I like that it addresses the fact that it takes steroid use to get to the level of muscularity that most people picture when they think “woman who lifts weights”. We could have a thread called “NO You Won’t Get Bulky”. As Bear and Maym mentioned, you have to seriously EAT and up your protein to TRY to gain bulk. Also, maybe a thread devoted to pregnancy and recovery would be good.

I’d be willing to do some writing, and I know Frenchie has done some fitness writing for work. We could also assemble some helpful resources and links. Maybe this has been done before?

that’s why i made this thread.

I hate wearing underwear.

also, 5/3/1 bulked me.

but I still dont look like a man. DAMNIT!

Also, anyone have a favorite running shoe? PM me what it is and why.

What.

Conditiong is an important part of weight lifting too.

After I trained myself to forefoot strike (to save my knees) I switched to Nike Frees and loved them. They’re light and don’t force your feet to do anything weird. I remember being glad to chuck out my old New Balance offroad shoes, which felt like bricks by comparison.

I’ve subsequently bought Vibram Bikilas but just prior to this, I injured my foot so I’m only just getting back to running and am sticking with the Frees until I am happy my foot can take the pounding.

I wear the Vibrams in the gym and wouldn’t wear anything else now, as far as lifting goes.

PS, also hate underwear so I don’t wear it. Actually, I haven’t had cystitis or thrush since I stopped wearing knickers.

HA! I hardly ever wear underwear either. It drives my BF nuts. I thought I was the only one.

I wear panties if I wear a dress or shorter shorts that are loose. Otherwise, no way!

I love underwear.

Hundreds of pairs and I wear it almost all the time.

Tis a rare dress I can’t find panties that work with.

I dunno, makes The Vagine feel safe n cuddled or something.

 Bear.

The Q & A format is good for us to talk to each other, and we absolutely need to keep it, but a beginner isn’t going to wade through pages of people talking about random information looking for a specific question.

We should keep this Q & A thread, but also have a couple of threads that remain at the top of the forum with factual information about lifting questions specifically for women. We get enough questions like that, to merit it’s own sticky. I’m thinking more like an article with comments and questions below, rather than an open forum for asking any question.

As I suggested, one thread could be about the physiology differences.

We could do a similar thread with some of the facts and problems related to maternity and postpartum.

Also, a thread with just links and books and so forth for getting started, although we have to be careful to not link to any competitor’s site.

As for Bre’s running shoe question, I’ve run for many years in Nikes. Air Pegasus were my faves and were rated really high by Runner’s World for people with a neutral shoe, and they were comparatively inexpensive, BUT then they changed something in the last few models and now I don’t like them. I hate when they do that!

I can do a neutral shoe. I’ve never had any problems or injuries and I can run in old shoes and it doesn’t seem to matter. If you are having joint or foot issues, then it’s a whole different deal. I know both Cal and Kimba have dealt with the whole “finding the right shoe” or looking at custom orthotics route. I’ve just been very, very lucky.

Underwear…YES.

I think a lot of women think that if they pick up anything heavier than the 10 pound DB they are going to look like Iris Kyle, instead of like Nadia or Maschy. Some pics like this would be pretty illustrative. Then show some of our own, along with lifting stats.

That crazy Tracy Anderson person is not helping! I just watched her infomercial at the gym. What the hell is “muscular engineering”. She claims that her program targets the “accessory muscles” to avoid getting bulky because it uses “muscular engineering”. Never mind that while she’s saying that, I can see her hopping around with a DB in her hand, clearly using her quads and bis. KOOK!

no underwear, even with jeans??

I see what your thinking, Puff!!

No underwear here either! Lol! I didn’t realize I wasn’t alone! Well, I have to these days but after I have this baby it’s back to no underwear! Panty lines show even with thongs and I am SO against that. I don’t have periods (usually) so it makes it all the easier.

Mom-in-MD- If I wear them with jeans all they do is hang out when i lean over or squat and with little kids I do that a lot. Rather wear a longer top and risk showing a “whale tail”.

Puff- I look like your picture with the addition of a baby bump… Too much? Ha!

If you look anything like Iris Kyle with a baby bump, we gotta see that! LOL LB!

Underpants are an absolute must for me. I’m very particular about the style as well. For years, I used to buy them at LaSeza Girl before the kids section went out of business. Has anyone noticed how slutty children’s underwear now look? Anyway, I like underwear with a tighter leg eleastic and at the moment, that’s hard to find except in kids underwear. I can’t abide them creeping up my ass crack and a more substantial leg elastic keeps them out. I’m not talking granny panties, more bikinis that don’t migrate up the crack. Like hallowed, I find it safer/more comfortable and it’s easier to wash underpants than all my other clothes all the time.

I stopped wearing underwear once I discovered PW. I figured I’d make it easier for Bear to ravage me…

seriously I’m wide in the hips with an “out there” booty. Makes it hard to find underwear that don’t give me lines and muffin tops. Also I was always picking them out of my crack in the gym. So most days I don’t wear them, depending on what I wear.

Mainy, you have an epic butt.

And x2 on constant adjustment.

I do sleep in boyshorts
