My number one goal in the gym is now to double my pullups (from 10 to 20) in the next 8 months, or come as close as possible. I’m about to start doing the Armstrong Pullup Program ( http://oneweb.utc.edu/~semperfi/physical.htm ), after spending the last few weeks doing pullups 4x a week. Since pullups are the main goal, but I want to keep or add to my strength in everything else if possible, should I ditch all other back work, or just do rows etc. after my pullups for the day? Will lifting for my back and biceps compromise my ability to recover fast enough to be doing pullups 5x a week, as on the Armstrong Program?
when powerlifters train for the squat, bench and deadlift, they do a lot of assistance work. i would only drop assistance work if you’re ‘peaking’ or about to test your max reps.
On the other hand, the program you linked to has a LOT of frequency and volume. i’d try it standalone before adding back in rows, curls etc.
personally, i think a program including weighted pullups would be superior - if i want to hit a certain weight for reps in ANY exercise, my first step would be to get my 1RM WELL above the weight i’ll be repping. you can’t rep 225 for 20 on the bench if your max is 250 barring some freak genetic accident of endurance.
good luck whatever approach you take man
I done that program several years ago. It worked well, but I’d second what Tagio said. If I was to do it again I’d probably do weighted pull ups on the Friday.
