Wasn’t this the bodybuilding forum once?
For lat width:
properly performed Rack Chins > Limited (bottom half) ROM Pullups/Pulldowns > Full Rom Pullups/Pulldowns.
So from your flow chart, you’re saying Rack chins are better than the others right? I’m just making sure I’m reading it correctly.
Better in the context of building latwidth for most people.
Also, after continuously hearing the term “Rack Chins” and not knowing wtf it was, I just checked it out on youtube. I know I can’t pass judgment because I have never performed them but, they just look like a pussy version of a pull up or chin. Why are they superior?
Of course they look like a pussy version. Who gives a fuck?
Yet they build latwidth so much better for most people (when performed correctly).
Great stretch, no cheating…
(There were some pics of Justin Harris’ before and after lat-spread in the DoggCrapp thread… He practically had no lats before despite being big…)
Bodybuilding isn’t about doing exercises just for the sake of doing those exercises.
So if something looks awkward, but is worth the trouble… Why complain?
Btw, when referring to limited ROM pull-ups/chins I meant:
(lo and behold, he isn’t even a bodybuilder and still thinks like that… Judging from his back, he may be doing something right)
Wendesday - BWT pull ups, NGr [wk1: x40 total reps, wk2: x45 total reps, wk3: x50 total reps, etc. - back off when needed] hit target reps in the fewest sets possible
Friday - Choose here and get creative - Isometric Pull up holds from an Underhand Grip 3-4x max time possible / Kipping Pull ups 3-4 sets of max reps / Lat Pull Downs / Erratic Pull ups [you pull up, and switch 1 hand position at the top [over, under, neutral, wide, narrow, etc. > lower into next rep - they are a killer]

Do pullups, pulldowns are for the pussies who don’t like lifting their body weight but would rather sit down and pull a bar down. I’m not saying pulldowns suck but pullups are better. So sure yeah do your pulldowns but make sure you’re doing your pullups too.
Yeah I agree 100%, I think both in conjuction is the best way to go. I like doing weighted chinups one day and real heavy pulldowns another day. Nothing like hanging there with some weight around your waist while you’re trying to hammer out some serious reps, exhilirating:D.
gay v straight, black v white, cut v bulk, whole eggs v egg whites, tv v radio, car v motorbike, dick v pussy, skim v whole, desktop v laptop, ahhh fuck it
i sucked at pullups and started forcing myself to do them. When I was at about 190lbs I could maybe do 6 or 8. Now i weigh 210 lbs and do about 5 with 90lbs hangin from my belt… Its now one of my favs… im a big fan of do what u suck at… the thing i like about pullups vs pulldowns is u cant really cheat doin pullups as much as doin pulldowns… i think…
Just because an exercise is great for overall development (like the squat orpullup) doesn;t make it the best exercise for building backwidth.
Fi youre doing GPP or want better hormonal output or whatever, weighted pullups rule. For a complete beginner, the pullup will build more overall upper body muscle than most movements.
For most people, rack chins and heavy pulldowns are the ONLY way to build significant back width.
if you CAn do your weighted pullups in a form stressing your lats properly, then YES weighted pullups are way better.
That said, this thread is NOT about building back width, its about using pullup strength as an indicator of lean gains during bulking up…so enough with the talk of pulldowns and rack chins.
In a Bodybuilding forum progress is determined froim whatever builds more backwidth for YOU.
Most people can;t juggle 6 oranges at once, but that doesn’t make it more interesting from a BB point of view.
Most people can;t ride a unicycle or cleanand press the heaviest kettlebells but froma BB point of view, no one gives a rats ass.
Do waht works and what gives you back width. if avoiding pulldowns and doing just pullups gievs you a V taper stick with it. If you don;t want a V taper but just want to do whatevers con sidered difficult go to the strength sports forum and start flipping tires after your night shift at Walmart.

Most people avoid pull-ups because they can’t do them. I also agree that if you are maintaing while gaining weight, you are making progress.
Ok I guess I shouldn’t have said what I said. I guess if you’re unable to do pullups then there’s nothing that can be done about that. I should have just said that pullups are better than pulldowns IMO. I can see how people could have taken offense to what I said, it was not meant that way and I apologize, it should have been worded differently.

Fair enough.
Guess you won’t end up in my stew-pot then.

So guys, what do you think about free weight vs machines, TBT vs split, slow gaining vs bulking?
Just beating a dead horse here player. It will turn into a flamefest faster then you typed that question. I think free weights are great, I think machines are great also. (ask me this question a year ago I’d probably just say freeweights only and TBT and I’d still probably be 155 today) I prefer a 2 way split (what im doing now), upper/lower split, or bodypart split and I prefer bulking long term and adjusting diet when necessary for less fat gain, better then doing one of them yoyo bulks (bulk then cut bulk then cut shit).
I look at the big picture which is gaining mass at a good pace for my long term goal of achieving an appreciable amount of muscle for my frame. I could care less what joe schmoe is doing over there.
I mean c’mon man this is a bodybuilding thread on what is mostly a bodybuilding site. If you’re a bodybuilder just doing free weights, avoiding machines and only do TBT you might be cutting yourself short.
