Pull Up Questions

Looking for opinions on a couple of pullups oriented questions bouncing around in my head. Currently I can complete 14 pullups with no additional weight attached. I can also complete 10 sets of 3 reps with 52.5 lbs attached. Here are my questions:

  1. I have been increasing the poundage on my 10x3’s at a steady rate but I have not had the same success increasing my total number of unweighted pulls. Are the two different and if so why?

  2. Which do you feel is more important assuming overall strength development, is my primary goal and overall athletic performance a close second - increasing the poundage on 10x3’s or increasing the number of unweighted reps?

Thanks in advance for the help.

  1. The two are different. Generally speaking, 10x3 involves sub-maximal strength, and high reps involves endurance strength. It would not be odd for someone to be able to pull a few reps with a lot of weight strapped on, yet not be able to pull 20-25 with bodyweight.

  2. Obviously for overall strength development, you should focus on increasing weight in 10x3. I too am interested in athletic performance as a close second and I rely on GPP, Oly lifts, kettlebells, etc. for this.
