Pull-up Question for Marines

Just curious - how many pullups did you do during a normal day? Did you have a minimum number you did every PT session, or a certain number you did before formations, etc? Thanks.

Well I cant speak for the marines. But in army basic training back in the 70s we had a pull up bar at the mess hall door.

It was 10 before every meal…

Are you looking to increase your pullups so you can max out the PFT score?

In college I ran the remedial PT program, and helped contract students max out PRT/PFT scores.

To get better at pullups I liked to do one max pullup test per week. The other 5 or 6 days perform 75% of max reps. Then retest.

I have a pullup bar hooked up to the ceiling right outside of my office, so when I get bored or tired of working on my computer I walk out and bust out 8 or so. I do that a couple times a day. I always max out with 20 pullups on my PFT.

Pullups are key to a good PFT score.
(I never remember the difference between pullups and chinups, I do mine palms facing away from me, so whatever those are called is what I do. In the Marines we call them pullups, no matter if palms are inboard or outboard).

i dont see why people worry about pull ups. pull ups are just plain easy, its the other cuntes that are difficult, the kind wer you face your palms away and use a wide grip, damn they are just killer.

i could probably knock abot 13 of them out maybe 15. if i trained properly for them i might be able to improve, maybe not. in terms of the easy pull ups with the narrow grip and the palms facing my face i could do about 20 at least maybe 25. i dont know last time i did them was 6 years ago.[/quote]

To irishmuscle—

PULL-UP:palms away aka pronated grip

CHIN-UP:palms facing you aka supinated grip

Thanks for the responses everyone. I’m former Army too. I just bought a Door Gym pull-up bar (which is great BTW if you don’t want to damage walls/beams) and like knocking out reps when I feel like it. I was just wondering if there was some daily standard for Marines, especially Infantry.

For Marine Corps pull up programs check out the Armstrong Pull Up Program or the Recon Ron Program, I’ve used the Armstrong program for a while now and maxed out the pull up portion of the PFT with ease when I met with my OSO 2 weeks ago.

I always rocked out my 20 on the PFT. The hundred situps were pretty much a given for anyone so it was always the run that got me. But when you get the 20 pullups you’re money no matter what. My key to success was pyramids. A one to ten up and down pyramid is about 100 pullups. It’ll get your numbers up fast.

I’m an infantry Marine, and there really is no standard pull-up routine we use. Pull-ups are almost always included in a PT session in one way or another, but they are mainly done on an individual basis. I’ve seen Marines in the infantry that can’t do 1 pull-up.

On a personal note, I just ran a 296 PFT 2 days ago.
