Puberty and Genetics

I’ve noticed that those who go through puberty at an early age seem to be the best athletes. I started to go through puberty when I was about 10 (this is considered an early age), and I’ve been told many times that I have very good genetics. Does anyone know anything about this?

I was in the full swing of adolescence when I was 9, in third grade. I had pubic hair, underarm hair, and the beginnings of a little mustache. Socially, it sucked. I have genetics that are much better than average: long muscle bellies, thick and strong tendons, a bird’s skeleton (though it is as dense an elephant’s), great leverage, hard (dense) muscles before ever training, VERY low bodyfat, and more. I also had great strength development. You see, I enjoy(ed) collecting various types of creatures, and many lived under very large rocks and fallen trees. I had to move them in order to capture the animals, and I’d pull so hard, I’d break my fingernails and shred the skin on my hands. So, basically, the answer is “Yes, I also note that those who encounter puberty earlier tend to have better genetics.”

I doubt there is any correlation. I personally have very good genetics although I’ve done some things that have gotten me out of shape nonetheless. I have long muscle bellies, a large frame, 17" natural calves, etc… I was personally a late bloomer though honestly I am still not that hairy as of age 28  When I graduated high school I weighed 185 at 6’ tall and had no bodyfat to speak of. Did I mention I never touched weights at the time? That’s a bit heavier than the average high school kid, at least for that height. The only ones bigger and leaner as me were those that hit the weights regularly.

I have 2 cousins both who looked like men in 6th grade and they have relatively poor genetics. One is short and fat with no muscle to speak of while the other is a big guy, and while he has a lot of natural muscle mass I wouldn't say he's gifted by any means.

I’d guess it’s just coincidence and there are just as many gifted late bloomers as there are early bloomers.

This is the very first time I’ve heard this topic even disussed. Just like you and the first response to your post, I can only speak for myself. Unlike both of you I was probably one the last guys to reach puberty among my classmates, as I was almost 15 years old before noticeable changes started to really occur. I entered my sophmore year of H.S. at about 5’ 7" weight unknown, graduated at 6’2" 175-180lbs and finally grew to 6’4"and 225lbs at my heaviest. I’ve always been a very good athlete, no matter my age or state of physical maturation. Obviously when a prepubescent (spelling?) 13 year old competes against other 13 year old boys who have matured it will be many times more challenging and in some arenas impossible to overcome. You can’t tell me you have never witnessed a child perform an act of athleticism that has almost boggled your mind. Some children are basically just waiting for that power and speed that come with puberty, the skill and coordination is already there. In fact, one could easily make an argument that children that are given more time to “practice” with their smaller selves, if you will, will be more likely to excel without puberty’s “early” interference. Basically, in my own little theory anyway, you’re given more time to fine tune your coordination with less resistance (you’re lighter), you spend less time gawking at the opposite sex (so you PRACTICE more) and if most your classmates are maturing slightly ahead of you then you can really only benefit from the increase in competition to further enhance your skills. To be honest I cannot really think of a logical argument to bolster your post, no disrespect intended. And being REALLY tall or REALLY big doesn’t REALLY count because some sports have positions that require size first and athletic ability as a bonus. And if I’m not mistaken Michael Jordan was a late bloomer and he didn’t do to bad.

The kids who mature earlier are the ones who get picked for all of the sports teams. The late bloomers get cut. The only difference is that the early maturers get more training thus making them better athletes.

Being a fatass for 25 years of my life. Now I am 26 and I am not a fatass anymore but struggling with consequences of ex fatassness. Anyway, I have a slow metabolism, I gain both fat and muscle easily, my muscle is not “dense” but watery, I can get big and voluminous easily but I am not “hard”. Medium frame, 5 ft 11, 200 to 210 lbs, I was both up to 270 and down to 155. Short tendons, monstrous legs compared to the rest of the body. In a couple of years of hard work and proper nutrition I will maybe look like some guys who never even touched a barbell and ate McDonalds during whole their life.

What’s it called when one remains mired in puberty in their 40s, as I seem to be? (Can anyone tell I got up early this morning and had plenty of coffee with my two MD6?)

I remember when I was a freshman this guy joined our football team. He was a sophomore…we thought he was the new linebacker coach. He was fully developed, tall muscular, and hairy. The next year a freshman came up from the middle-school with similar stats…he could of bought alcohol. There were several others who fit the early developer profile and yes they did seem to perform better on the field. I don’t think this was a result of superior athletic ability…they were simply out weighing and out muscling their competition. I graduated in 97 at 6"1’ 160lbs (soaking wet) today I am 6"3’ 210lbs and my body fat pecentage hasn’t really changed. On a recent trip home I saw some of those early developers. None of them were any taller, None of them were more muscluar, Most were showing signs of male pattern baldness(the DHT that gave them their beards was now removing the hair on their head), and they all looked several years older than they were. They had simply peaked early. I have yet to peak. “A Brave New World” gives an interesting insight on why it is not benificial to go from infant to adult in fourteen years.

I am 16 years old and near enough fully developed i hit the early stages of puberty at 12 and then really hit it with an avengence at 14 in my first year at high school i was 5’10 and 160 lbs of fat my age was 12 at the end of second year i was 5’11 and 160lbs of muscle and fat at the end of third year i was 198 lbs of muscle and fat infact i was 24 % bf but i was the stongest in my year group and was second fastest at the end of this year i am 6’ 172 lbs 10 % bf and am the strongest by a long shot and as for the thefastest i know i will be but will confirm it at the school sports. The difference is up untill the third year i didn’t train very hard maybe once or twice a week but never really pushing myself it was always my natural abilities that caried me through but this last year i have trained my arse off and have experimented with diets and i am in my best shape ever and stronger than ever i deadlift 336 lbs squat the same and bench about 200+lbs i know my bench sucks but i have only really been training for a year and it was my weekest lift to begin with and in the beginninng i couldn’t do 5 pushups i now can do 52 in a minute and 10 wide grip palms away chin ups with a 324 tempo. so i though i would let u know about my transformation (soz i read too much muscle media in ma youth thank fuck i was too lazy to put it into practice).
