Protein Timing Question

got into a bit of a dispute with my uncle. he’s 50 and does extreme cardio + crossfit training. (ex: run 100m, do 25 BW squats, run 200m, do 10 jump lunges, run 400m, do 10 pushups, run 800m, do 10 chinups) I do heavy weight with low reps. (less than 8) I’m in better beach shape than he is, but he’s a bigger guy than I am.

He says that your body can only take in 4oz of water at a time, (10-15min) and mixing your protein with 16oz water then slamming it is a waste of protein. However, I remember reading in a T-Nation article that there is no proof that your body can only take in a set number of grams of protein (I believe it was 40?). Who is right?

By the way, I mix with milk, but I don’t think that would change anything. My arguement is that “post-workout protein” needs to be taken close to immediately after a workout, and going by his rule it would take me up to 45 minutes to finish my post-workout protein.

Well let him think that. Food/water still goes through your digestive track. That takes like what, 10 hours for food? and 2 for water?

Also it is logical your body will only adsorb a certain amount of, vitamins, proteins, fibers, fats, ect at a time. Thats why you wouldn’t get 200g protein in 1 meal, But 4 oz of water is bullshit.

Well he’s wrong about the water…
and I’m pretty sure your body can only take about 20-30g of protein per hour, thats why right after a ‘protein meal’ it is unwise to take a protein drink, since it will just digest like food.

Anymore g’s of protein, and you will create an excess of amino acids, which can lead to early fatigue for the body, which is obviously not good for building muscles.

Also, taking a “post-workout protein” would probably go better immediately after some carbs… Protein AFTER carbs. Around 45 minutes after your workout, there is a time where your muscles will absorb all the carbs you give it. Fruits are the best, the simple sugars + carbs will have your glycogen stores refilled in no time.

CARBS first PROTEIN second, in importance, for post work out. They are both needed, though.

It’s about 8 years old, so some of the research may be dated. However, the point your uncle made is even MORE outdated.
