Protein Bakery-My Version

Ok so I stole that title from a company that already exists, but I didn’t know what else to title this.

Now their stuff tastes good however it’s LOADED with FAT!! They make up from the protein taste by throwing in a crap ton of butter.

I have been experimenting with different ways to make baked goods with Metabolic Drive and have found some tasty ways of doing it! I have made both Apple Cinnamon and Blueberry muffins and brought them into work and no one knew that they had 12grams of protein each and about 6 grams of fat from olive oil! I have also used flax seed oil and it tastes the same.

Now what I’m wondering is how big do you think this market segment is? Anyone think I could break even if I start up a small time bakery online to do in my spare time?

I may take a handful of orders to see how well it works out and to judge my costs as shipping must be quick. The average life span of the muffins is about a week before they get hard, although even this can be over come by nuking it.

The cookies I have made last a bit longer.

Anyway cooking as always been a huge part of my family and I started out young. For some reason growing up in an Italian family my sister never learned how to cook so when we were little, if mom and dad were out of town, I better cook unless I wanted Kraft Mac and Cheese! My great grandfather owned a candy and bakery shop in NYC back in the day, now I’m just putting a healthy twist on things!

Haha and for those wondering NO I am NOT using what I get from my PC to try and turn a profit!! I have been making these things for a year now and I’m just wondering about others thoughts on it! Thanks for any input all!!

That sounds like a good idea! Since you enjoy cooking and have experimented with some products, no harm in trying your hand on a bigger scale. Since people are becoming more health conscious, I think it’s a great idea.

The hardest part will be marketing your product and getting your product known and out to the public, as with any product. You will have to select a target market/area and start from there. I think your target market will be health conscious individuals, ages 18-44, who consume exercise at least a few times a week.

Initially, I think the best way is to target the people from your work. If they like it, ask them if they want to buy some. If so, when you give them their products, ask them for 3-5 names of people that might like your product and that they will probably share your product with. That way, you at least have some leads to try to sell your products.

Check with your gym to see if you can sell some there, or maybe rent a booth at a local health/supplement convention, maybe even the Arnold Classic (although that might be a stretch). Distribute flyers at health stores, gyms, supplement stores, sporting good stores, etc. Anywhere where people consume sport.

Also, if you are using Biotest products, see if TC or Tim Patterson can help you out with some sort of sponsorship, maybe have a link on T-Nation to your website, or just sell the products here directly.

Just some ideas, but definitely give the business some consideration.

Sorry for the long post.

Actually, I was watching something on MSNBC, I believe, about a woman that used her family’s syrup recipe and created a really good selling product.

Her recommendation: Keep going to local grocery stores like smaller ones if you have to and just keep going and contacting them. Persistence is key. If it works, then you can eventually move up to the larger stores.

You should try going to local bodybuilding shows, powerlifting meets, and gyms to try to market your stuff. I think there is a pretty good market for this stuff especially since most people don’t associate protein with actually tasting good.

Of course, I highly recommend you send me some samples also so I can spread the word for you around Maryland

Just sponsor me, that will solve all your problems

No sorry need man you had some excellent ideas!! I never thought about selling them at the gym, the one I go to has a cafe in it so that would be perfect!

Thanks again for the ideas! I’ll see what I can do with them as I’m not looking to go too large yet, more like another hobby for me as I like to cook!

Haha well with me being from DC maybe we can work something out. Great idea with the powerlifting meets! I know of a local one that lets anyone that wants to set up!

Haha well I dunno how me sending you free food will help me! Seeing as how I have yet to make a penny on my baking.

Why don’t you talk to the local 24 hour fatness and gyms and stuff where any one of those rich yupi’s will jump on something that tastes good and can be marketed as good for their “work out sesh”? I think it’s a wicked idea (not knocking saying sell it to yupis by the way, I’d buy 'em, it’s just they’ve got more money:P) and I wish you the best of luck.

So 12 grams of protein and 6 grams of fat, what kind of carb content are we talking about ? Because if it fits into the AD i think you might have a market there.

From personal experience breakfast is the meal i have the hardest time being able to eat AD meals, and breaking it up with a muffin might be nice from time to time.

Lol there is no possible way a muffin could ever fit into the AD!

On the AD breakfast is the easiest!! Get yourself some eggs, bacon, sausage, peppers and you are good to go!

Oh carbs are about 25 with 6grams of fiber. Whole Wheat of course!

i actually did see a AD qualified muffin on here one, have no idea where it is.

Its not that i dont know what i eat at breakfast, it just seems that i have the hardest time getting myself to eat high fat in the mornings, all other hours of the day i love it.

Wow that would have to be one odd muffin since you can only have 30grams carbs including veggies!!

Hmmm I would be very interested to hear about that!

Is this for the muffins AND the cookies, or just the muffins?

Sounds great CP - of course if you want to share your recipes…

Not to put a downer on this though, and I don’t know what it’s like in the US, but selling food products here in the UK requires quite a lot of red tape to be got through first.

It is allowed for things like charity garden fate’s etc. but as soon as it becomes a commercial venture there are lots of other things to consider - insurance being one of the main things.

Although it’s highly unlikely given the sort of things you are looking at producing, but if you manage to give someone food poisoning and it can be traced back to you, then you are going to want some good insurance to make sure you don’t lose out big time.

Just the muffins, although I am sure I can make a cookie very close to that. I shall check and see what I can do with the cookies!

Very good point! I really don’t plan on making this a large scale thing, rather just some orders at powerlifting meets and sending some to people on here.

I know there is much less rep tape as far as baked goods since here in the US you don’t to have nutritional information listed. Now of course that’s the whole thing I’m going for with my baked goods so I’ll always have it!

Like I said though this is just an idea for a hobby of mine. By the way how odd will it look if I compete in a powerlifting meet and then sell muffins and cookies at it?? HAHA

PMSL - I can see it now…

You’ll be stood behind your stall with a “CP’s Muffins” apron on and the call will come over the tannoy that it’s your turn to lift.

You’ll already have your belt on underneath so you don’t need to remove the apron and you can advertise while you compete!

Now I’ve got this mental image of you deadlifting some huge weight while wearing a floral print apron and a bakers hat!

Haha hmm I could use the extra pockets in the apron to carry the smelling salt! I’m thinking the bakers hat will be a must for my next deadlift and possibly squat.

Haha I actually have a good name picked out for the muffins and my future gym. Hmmm I could always sell my muffins at my gym as well…

By the way if you happen to live in SC I plan on opening a gym within the next 2 years. I have already priced out the equipment (almost all from elitefts.com) and the office equipment, just looking for a good place to set-up shop and then get the small business loan!
