Programming Accessory Movements

I’m currently doing 5/3/1 (with rep PRs) + FSL. I’m doing the standard 50-100 reps of push, pull, legs/core. My question is around selecting accessory movements. Specifically, I’m wondering if I should select a “similar” accessory movement to the main lift of the day or an “opposite” accessory movement. For example, I would consider goblet squats similar to back squats, but hinge/hamstring movements like back extensions or leg curls opposite movements. What’s worked best for you guys?

I don’t program them. I just do whatever needs to be done for that day.

I currently program them. How do you decide what needs to be done on a given day?

Jim lays it out in all the programs. Usually 50-100 reps of pushing, pulling and single leg/core.

Upcoming competitions and equipment availability will dictate what movement gets used on that day. I do a lot of dips and chins because they require minimal set-up.

It really doesn’t matter. It’s just about getting some work in. As long as the assistance won’t interfere with another workout, then you’ll be fine. Just make sure you cover the body over the course of the week, and it really won’t matter at all which day you do what assistance exercises.
