Program For Gaelic Footballer

Hi guys,
heres my dilema, i have exactly 8 weeks till my Championship semi final game, i have no more games till this game, this is the most important game of the year for me and if we win then the final!!!

I am 16 stone and 6 foot 4 inches tall, i am muscular build and do weights pre season religiously. I have stopped the weights now and am basically doing stamina and sprinting in trianing, i know i should have kept weights once a week etc but just dont have the time!!!

Basically what i want is to be stronger, run faster and jump higher!!! I am going to watch my diet religiously! i am a physical therapist and so am quite educated with the body etc etc to a certain degree.

I NEED AND WILL TAKE IN ALL ADVICE I CAN GET TO HELP ME ACHIEVE MY GOAL!!!

I am particulry interested in the weights side of things for my lower limb, i have strong legs and so normally dont do lower limb weights,
i dont have access to a gym now really and so is my dilema,
can anyone out there give me some tips on building my speed and stamina and learning to jump higher?? Obviously sprints for power and to training my aerobic systems.

Im looking for any experienced tips etc, i will presumably have access to dumbells alright!

PLease help guys! Attached is my pic! im in blue and outjumped my marker! Will take on all advice!!!

Olympic lifts and deadlifts are probably the best thing you can do if you don’t have access to a squat rack.

BTW, for those of you not familiar with Gaelic Football…

I don’t watch gaelic footy or Aussie rules but remember seeing this on the news.

What was that all about? I thought they were completely different games.

They are. Aussie Rules is different to Gaelic Football but they don’t have anyone to play against internationally so they make a hybrid game.

The Irish basically have minimal contact in their game where Aussie rules is full on contact. The Irish generally have the pace and skill with a round ball where the Aussies use brute strength to intimidate them.

The series is on its knees though because the Irish don’t want to get bashed up any more.

This is worth watching if you want to see what tactics the Aussies went with.

Wild stuff. No wonder the Irish don’t want to play anymore.

It is kind of like putting Manchester U up against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Man… that looks fun as hell. It’s like basketball/rugby/soccer lol.

They’re not totally different games. Aussie Rules grew from Gaelic football roots. Thing is, Gaelic football rules wasn’t as regulated (as it is today), when Aussie Rules started developing. The Gaelic football taken by immigrants to Aus was essentially hurling without the sticks. And hurling, in its pre GAA form, was REALLY ROUGH STUFF.

Ok, I can kind of figure out the rugby ball. They play rugger (both codes, and bloody good at it too), so why have 2 balls when 1 can do.

But those goal posts? Who the hell thought that up? Obviously someone who had taken one hit too many, and was seeing double (or triple) at the time.

Yeah it’s a bit silly. Our guys (AFL) are professional or at least semi-professional whereas the Irish are all amateurs. It is not really fair. The AFL guys carry more muscle, are faster and have a higher level of fitness. In reality it would be more balanced to just play Gaelic rules. We would loose a lot more but Amatuer Vs Professional athletes is never going to be fair.

I’d pay so much money to watch that.

I think the real unfairness stems from the fact that GAA players aren’t used to rugby style contact. They’re used to running with the ball, bouncing off shoulders and breaking thru tackles. Not getting wrapped up and dragged to the ground ala rugby.

The GAA players need to learn how to offload the ball quicker because all to often once the tackle’s put in they get wrapped up and aren’t able to release and lose possesion.

Maybe if the contact rules were adjusted a bit it would be fairer on the GAA players, but then youre asking the AFL guys to play by a totally different set of rules that probably isn’t fair to them. Catch 22 really.

great…I’m at work with high hopes of getting a lot done…now I’m watching You Tube.

I’ve hear of Gaelic football, never watched. Now I’m hooked, looks like an awesome sport

What it basically boils down to is:

Irish ball-handling skills are generally better

Aussies better in contact (obviously)

The choice of ball (round or oval) makes a difference, but not as much as it used to. The real decider is how much roughhousing is allowed. With that minimised, I expect the Irish to win more than they lose, due to their superior ball-handling and distribution (especially stringing short passing movements together). Without that, the Aussies will win.

Ya it is an awesome sport, Hurling is my preferred sport but its too skillful to play at a high level around the world outside ireland, u need to be playing hurling since you were 7 and 8 to play at a decent level locally while gaelic football you could pick up handy enough.

My training to date has included plenty of sprinting and a 2 mile jog to where i do my sprinting, im adding small hilly areas and banks to the end of my sprints too, im also back doing my upper body weights, i have seen some interesting posts from DeFranco on increasing vertical jump so i am gonna give them a try midweek sometime after i do my sprinting!

Sorry for bringing this up again but its exatly what i’m looking for!
