Prepping for School Competion

Hello all! in about 12 days or so my football team is going to have testing. All these lifts are raw or at least no powerlifting suits, knee/wrist wraps may be allowed. They will test for a) squat b) bench c) powerclean. Now my questions are:

What do powerlifters and olympic lifters do to prep themselves in the week before a competition in order to squeeze out a new PR?

Would you recomend using knee/wrist wraps if possible?

My plan is to not lift any weights 5 days prior to the testing days. I’m still somewhat a noobie to weightlifting so Im not gonna be attempting any 800lb squat. Im trying for 285 squat, 185+ bench, 185 Clean.

The best thing you can do to try and increase your lifts in such a short amount of time is to focus on your form. If you can have one of your coaches look at your form and hopefully he can help you.

Rest up, and eat some good food. Keep loose by doing some warm-up type of stuff. I wouldn’t worry about knee or wrist wraps if you aren’t already used to them, no sense in over complicating things.

Ok. yeah im definatley going to read every single Dave Tate/elitefts article on bench/squat form, as well as O-lift form articles.

As far as knee/wrist wraps, I agree with what you said. I’ll definatley bust out some chalk tho

Don’t let the thoughts of form complicate your efforts though. It’s good to read up on the stuff and practice good form, but its not going to bring you from a 185 bench to even a 200 bench in 12 days time.

I’m not saying forget about it, but don’t let it fill your head so much that you can’t even match your previous best numbers.

With 12 days left, you’re going to increase your lifts by absolutely sweet FA I’d say!!

If I was you, I’d get in the wraps tomorrow and try and do 3 or 4 sets of 2 with a weight you could handle for 4 or 5 reps without them.

On each set try to wrap the wraps tighter and tighter.

Then in another 5 or 6 days I’d try a medium heavy single for one or two sets with the wraps on again. Something manageable, that you could do for 3 reps without them.

The only gain you’re really gonna make between now and then is by getting used to your wraps. In my opinion.

From my experience that is the worst thing to do. My coaches use to tell me to touch high on the chest, flair my arms and do a lot of flyes to increase my bench. What did this do nothing except fuck up my shoulders make me really good at flyes and really suck at bench. I would just read some articles on form here Eric Cressey has a good one that talks about lats involved in bench this might help.

Ok thanks everyone for your input. As of right now I definatley feel like im overtraining so I believe that by getting sufficient rest before testing I’ll increase a lot of my numbers by being fresh.

Thats honestly what I’m riding on, its hard for me to explain but I’m so fucking overtrained right now that I think i’ll be able to pull it off.

I guess I was assuming that his coaches knew what they were doing.
