Pre-Making Your Shake: Protein Break Down?

I am posing the question to anyone that can offer insight, research, or opinion:
If you pre-make your shake before you go the gym, so you can slam those post workout BCAA’s — is the integrity --nutritionally or otherwise–compromised?

Also, what if you made a large batch of said protein/BCAA/Glutamine Shake and kept it in the fridge, one week at a time --is there anything to be concerned about there.

**my initial reaction is No—proteins are stable–but the notion of anything that is easily digestible, I think would degrade or lose it’s nutritional integrity over time.

I can’t think of any reason why that would be bad for it. Maybe some of the proteins would denature? But that happens during digestion anyways.

i know creatine will convert to it’s waste product (creatinine?) if left in water too long, so if your whey has that in it, it could be an issue.

personally i just throw my shake ingredients in a shaker and fill it up at the gym when i’m done, that way it’s “fresh”

Have you ever smelt a used shaker thats been in your gym bag a couple of days? Its fucking disgusting if you’ll pardon the language.

I believe the proteins start to go rancid pretty quickly (Read hours rather than minutes). It’s one of the main reasons Biotest dont do a ready to drink version of Surge Recovery IIRC, they would have to add preservatives.

Why cant you just take the powder in dry and a bottle of water. A shaker is about £2, so $3-4, a sports bottle about the same to store a litre of water.

Why does everyone make life unliveable?

Food for thought (no pun intended):

Doesn’t milk do fine for several days in the refrigerator?

Regardless that it will go rancid if left in a gym bag for a few days?

And doesn’t milk do fine, even in a shaker in a gym bag, if it’s only a matter of a couple of hours since being taken out of the refrigerator?

Why would a person expect the milk protein isolates and/or concentrates in a protein shake to do worse?

As for BCAA’s, they are also fine with such treatment.

I am not sure about the idea of mixing up an entire week’s worth. That may be pushing it.

You are going to have more bacteria in your mixture, probably (simply from finding their way from your household environment as you are making the mix) than is the case with the pasteurized milk. So therefore the refrigerated life may not be as good as that of milk, but say one day is certainly no issue.

Thanks Bill,

I read somewhere on here that the proteins started to turn after something like 10-12 hours, could have been a forum post, so possibly, in fact probably BS.

I think the OP was talking about mixing up a whole lot, the picture I got was a massive punchbowl of protein(Now there’s a thought…), that one could dip into throughout the week.

I agree that a whey+milk shake would do fine left to its own devices for a few hours in a gym bag/locker, hell even in a hot car it’d be fine for 2-3 hours, palateablity is another issue. I’m not sure the same shake would last 5 days in the fridge, which is how I read the OP.

I guess I just dont see the problem with water/pint carton of milk added to a shaker/flask and shaken/stirred PWO. BCAA’s can be purchased in powder form, as can most other PWO additions people make. These are going to disolve almost instantly in a water/milk mix for the sake of 30s shaking. I dont understand why you would want to blend specifically a PWO shake days before you need it.

I mean, if you wanted to blend a ‘breakfast’ shake the night before, with oats, fruit, etc etc if you had an early start and a blender would be disruptive, then sure I can see that and I reckon it’d do fine, but who needs a shake blended 4-5 days in advance?!

Thanks for the replies-- I was curious about this for a while now.
I usually take mine dry to the gym and then mix it there, post work out.

Currently living in Austria, with no microwave I was looking to cut a few minutes off my morning routine (boil oats, repeat)–just curious to see if I could prep a week’s worth, the way I do my meals on Sunday night.
(side note: anyone else get that tiny little bit of satisfaction seeing their tupperware all lined up and staked day by day)

The temperature danger zone for food is 4 hours at 40 to 140 degrees.
