@atlas13 I’m installing the archery backstop you described. I started shopping online for a recurve bow and am overwhelmed with the amount of options. I know you and @mechinos are archery guys. I would greatly appreciate it if you gentlemen could give me some advice on a draw weight everyone would enjoy shooting, without being too light. Any other advice would be appreciated.

I have really only ever shot a compound bow so it’s a bit different in terms of draw weight. The cam profile and other design elements really change what the user experiences in drawing back a compound bow. Draw length also affects this, which some people forget as your draw length typically has an effect on the cam cycle.

Anyway, as a life long lifter you personally will likely discover that you can easily pull back just about any bow on the market. On archery forums it’s a bit hilarious how people complain about a “heavy” draw weight. I would shoot a 100lb bow if they made one so I could shoot laser bolts out to 60yds with a single pin. If I said that on an archery forum everyone would instantly throw hate at me, lol. If I told people I can dumbbell row a 100lbs on here people would feel sorry for me…it’s a funny world we live in.

Unfortunately I have not done much in the way of shooting a recurve. They look like a lot of fun but a pro shop will be much more helpful than what I can offer in this aspect. A recurve and long bow are significantly harder to draw, shoot well, and really not a lot in common with a compound. You could say I am not a real archer because I don’t shoot traditional and I would tend to agree with you.

Finding a bow that will fit several people well could be tricky. Er on the side of too little draw weight if it’s just shooting targets for fun, imho. If you are chasing critters with it then it’s all about being as lethal as possible within your limits and taking clean ethical shots is the highest priority. To me that means selecting the highest draw weight you can shoot well with and practice a lot with and not get too tired from. Usually heavier draw weight will reduce your accuracy as it’s harder on the shooter to do all the shot process correctly/fluidity and without overthinking it.

Anyway, happy to hear you are in the market for a new recurve. I may be asking for your opinion on such a thing in the future. It’s always been on my list to try out.

Found out my late wife’s brother just passed. He was a little younger then me and apparently had a heart attack. He had been on HBP medication since his 20’s but he always stayed lean and never smoked. He wasn’t big into exercise but went from being the lead hand on a large cattle ranch to working on oil fields. Safe to say he was active. The poor guy didn’t even have time to call 911. It’s a reminder that every day is a gift.

Thanks gentlemen and we learned that the cause of death was a brain bleed and not a heart attack.

I did a will yesterday for a guy with brain/throat/lung cancer. He/s terminal. I knew him and I didn’t recognize him when he entered the office.

Your regaining your strength since cancer is really impressive. Keep up those good workouts.

After the funeral I took one of my daughters for a walk down Main St of Sturgis. These bikes caught my eye.

The moped with Florida plates looks li might have actually been drivin to Sturgis.

A lot of people with those Honda Trail 90s ride the hell out of them. Over on a motorcycle forum I am on, AdvRider, people talk about riding them cross country, off-road, all over the damn place. There are some pretty fun YouTube videos with people doing it.

My father in law wants one bad. :joy:

I haven’t been to Sturgis since 2006. Beautiful riding out there. And yes, we rode there, :joy:

Seems like the percentage of people actually riding their bikes out has been going down. The summer I graduated high school I ran my uncle’s campground south of Deadwood. I took a couple of campers to the (old) Buffalo Chip for a concert. That was quite an experience. Spent my days off exploring the back roads of the Black Hills on a borrowed dirt bike.

Yeah we always used to joke that we rode our bikes to trailer week. :joy:

Been to the Chip a couple times. Definitely a wild place.
