Post Viral Recovery

In the middle of January I came down with a terrible virus. It’s called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. It was basically caused by the herpes zoster virus, which is what gives you chickenpox.

Anyways, it attacked my facial nerve and inner ear nerve and damaged them. It caused my face to be paralyzed on one side and caused vertigo/balance issues. For a couple of months I was stuck on the bed/couch not moving much at all. I had to go through vestibular therapy, which is basically physical therapy for your balance.

I am now at the point where I am doing most things I was able to do before I got sick. I’ve started to go to the gym again a few weeks ago. The problem is that I am really weak and I suffer from something called post viral fatigue.

My body gets tired way too easily and whenever I exert myself too hard my head feels weird and my balance becomes worse. I’ve tried to split my workouts into upper body on one day and lower on the other day. I was doing some chest and back the other day, with not much weight, and I guess I exerted myself too hard because my body was too exhausted the next couple of days.

I’m just wondering has everybody ever gone through something like this before? It’s hard not being able to workout with the same intensity I use to. It just bugs me that I don’t know when I will be back to working out like normal. It’s not like a normal injury where a doctor says something like wait 4-6 weeks before you go back. It’s just depressing sometimes…

I had shingles across my back and chest and didn’t go to the doctor for 3 weeks until it became unbearable when I was in football in High school as a junior but to get it in a dangerous place such as your face and ear sucks.

Yeah it sucks. The worst thing to ever happen to me. They say it can sometimes take more than a year to fully recover.
