Post Surgery and Weight Gain

Next month I am going in for a third shoulder surgery. I feel that this is the worst time to be getting the operation because Summer is fast approaching. All year I’ve been training hard and doing Berardi’s PN. I am about about 6 weeks away from being six pack lean (@ around a BW of 180). The only light at the end of the tunnel is that this surgery will not be as serious as my previous two (SLAP and Full Bankart Reconstruction). I will be in a sling for two days and actually start PT the day of the surgery.

Needless to say, this surgery throws a wrench into my body comp goals for the Summer. Does anyone have advice for how I should approach my training and nutrition for April/May? I am well aware that trying to lose weight following surgery is foolish, but I do what to minimize any weight gain/muscle loss so that I do not set myself too far behind my goals.

I can’t offer too much in terms of technical advice and I’m sure others will help, but all I can say from personal experience is that if hitting your summer goals involves further risk to your shoulder, then it is better to wait for next summer! I’ve known plenty of people who messed themselves up further because they couldn’t bring themselves to consolidate and slow down when it was required.

This said, you’re in as good a position as any to tell how well you’ll react after the surgery. Perhaps wait for that before making any definite decisions. However, you can certainly work on the fat-loss without needing to use your shoulder further. As for not being able to pack on muscle through Apr/May, I’m not too sure.

Go lighter to begin with - perhaps that will be enough stimulus to keep the muscle that you have, and hopefully your surgery doesn’t put you out for too long.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
