Poor Hip-Hop

In another thread, I mentioned six or seven classic tracks, and you said you never heard any of them. How can you know anything about the greatest, or who’s overrated, or anything when you don’t even know some of the undisputed classics?

Ironic that Jay-Z (and LL) is also one of the oldest of the names I threw out there still rapping.

I just want to point out that White lights knows just as much, if not more, rap history than I do.

Bravo, sir. I should revoke my Black card.

Does anyone remember D4L and their hit Laffy Taffy?
Who remembers Drama and his hit “Left, Right, Left”?
Who remembers Gucci man and whatever bullshit he put out?

That shit dies quick. People will recognize Jadakiss, Mobb Deep, DMX, and other rappers who can actually “spit”.

“I got me some bathing apes”

That line is from a Soulja boy song. Funny, but no longevity.

do i know who BDK is? is that serious question? yes, i listen to rap that isnt backpack. i know a few of his songs but i hate the whole late 80s-early 90s one syllable flows. obviously people older than me are going to like him more because they grew up with him and have a sense of nostalgia when listening to him.

if you arent older than me…or not by much, and you listen to him…you just need to stop trying so hard to be down. anyway, i dont find rappers from that time to be as clever as rappers today. i think any Fabolous freestyle would destroy any early rappers entire career.

i dont know what it is you guys look for in your music. i look for wit, wordplay, punchlines, or pure entertainment.

that song was only 2-3 years old, and Shawty Lo came from D4L so yea i think people still know who they are.

i never heard left,right,left

which Gucci Mane song? the one he did a few years ago Jeezy? or the ones he did this year with Rocko, Shawty Lo, OJ Da Juiceman, Gorilla Zoe?

i do feel bad for hip hop, it has the most nerdy fanboys listening to it of any genre.

It had nothing to do with anyone else but you. The music isn’t even the issue. You simply fit the profile of the average wannabe who assumes that his shallow understanding of what he sees on BET and MTV equal the foundation of an entire culture that has been around for decades.

I mean, where did you grow up again?

im a wannabee? how the fuuuuuuuck do you figure? im me. thats it. i dont go around like you clowns listening to music from 10 years ago because i wanna seem down. i just listen to what i like. i dont give a fuck if you like it.

i listen to rap, techno, dancehall, reggaeton. whatevers clever. im not the one talking about how Tupac is the greatest rapper ever, in fact thats how i spot the wannabees.

check my username for where i grew up smarty pants. you think youre tough cause you from Houston? you serious? you arent a gangbanger, you arent a drug dealer, you arent a killer. youre a doctor. you didnt do fed time, you went to medical school. i guess when all other arguments fail you try to play the “im from the hood” card.

yeah thats a little too harsh on em from my part. for when they came out they were good. difference is you cant compare them to the rappers out now. have you heard Rev-Run’s new shit? its absolutely awful. i understand what theyve done as far as being pioneers but that doesnt mean i have to like them.

So, no matter how universally agreed upon awful a song is, it’s cool for YOU to like it, because you like what you like? But if I like Kane, I’m trying yo be down? You don’t even make sense, kid.

And I really would love to see who you think of “clever”.

I’ve been to plenty of Mexican neighborhoods in LA. I lived there for 8 years.

EDIT: I just saw this wasn’t directed towards me.

South Boston was a white Irish ghetto. Get your shit straight. I doubt much rap/hip-hop was coming out of there.

The Prof, being black, would be in a bad spot there.

Glad to see mainstream stuff like this. The majority of current rap videos include guys with purses and more jewelry then girls kissing guys on the mouth. 90s rap was manly as hell from mobb deep to atcq. [/quote]

You say mainstream stuff. However and unfortunately, mainstream has come to mean bashing America in anyway possible and denigrating cops.

I listened to the song and I find it ironic that Nas is able to rap about how in America you can “never be free” yet I would like to see him make a record in North Korea where he says “in North Korea you can never be free”. Curious what would happen to him there? Free speech in North Korea? hilarious.

Has Nas made any rap song specifically promoting the military or the troops who protect Nas? Until the time comes when Nas is hiding under his table in his multi million dollar home with a notebook and a pen because of daily terrorist bombings, I don’t think he will realize how free he actually is.

Sorry for the rant. Excuse me while I go play some Wu tang 36 chambers.

Bashing America? Because of the song about Fox News? When did Fox News represent America?

I am military and I don’t expect a tribute to the military unless that is his own desire. Are YOU military?

In my opinion, Soulja Boy is known just like 2 girls 1 cup is.

If you notice the song I listened to, quoted and referenced was not “Sly FOx”. But since we are on the subject, Nas mentioned in SLy Fox that the only black people who watch Fox are dead or in jail. Since when does NAs speak for all black people? I know Al Sharpton doesn’t.

And it is interesting that Nas associates himself with MOveon.org because let’s not pretend they are a pro America group with George Soros at the helm. They have been openly anti semitic, and have made attacks on Christians as well. They also took out a full page ad in the New York times attacking General Petraeus (ah the memories). WHere were the protests and the signatures then?

I respect the fact that you are in the military and that is why I give to charities that support you/them. I assume that Nas also openly expresses his support for the military and encourages others to give to charity since he associates with other “noble” organizations such as Moveon.org. Does he encourage or is his “desire” lacking?

I don’t expect all rappers or all musicians to do songs or tributes to the military because this is a free society and no one is forcing them to. However, isn’t it strange that lyricists are not stepping up to the mic and expressing even a little pride in being American during a time of war?

Wouldn’t war evoke these feelings even more? Where are the raps expressing the outrage over the beheadings of innocent victims, the suicide bombings, the terrorists who are released from Guantanamo and go back onto the battlefield to resume killing more soldiers, the outrage over Chris Mathews calling troops cold blooded killers? All rappers can come up with is propaganda these days?

i.e. George Bush burned down the towers, lies lies lies blah blah blah. If people only listen to Matt Lauer or Katie Couric or rappers who pretend to know history and politics, they end up feeling guilty of being American rather than proud.
