yay dexter!! getting toward the end of season 3
Hi Plucky!
I’ve been trolling this forum for a long time too before I decided to make an account today. As well I am also a female lifter at UNC and only saw your thread today. What a coincidence! Do you work out mostly at the SRC or Rams? I next to never see any females doing much lifting.
I hear you about the exam stress, hope you’re almost done!
My favorite lift is the deadlift and I’ve never seen another girl in the gym do them - so if you see a long-haired brunette doing those come say hi!
And this is very, very true. Hipsters EVERYwhere.

Welcome back!
Wassup! I think I’m back on the wagon…to update, Christmas break was delightful, I’m feeling good again, my spring semester schedule is great, I’m finally sleeping normal hours again and eating right and taking all my vitamins. I think it’s safe to say my recent bout of depression is over.
That, and I really missed you guys! I just wasn’t ready to talk. Here I am though, and I’ll have a workout to post in a couple of days if all goes according to plan. I’ve already been to a gym since classes started, seeing as I signed up for a weight training class for the obligatory “lifetime fitness” course…aka the, “here, Sarah, have a free A,” class.
Now, I just have a couple of month’s worth of progress in at least ten logs to catch up on…fun!
^Nice. Clear-headed & ready do damage.
Welcome back Pluck.
does happy dance
missed u!

Lifetime fitness is cool because as you said 1) free A, 2) you get to have a bunch of fitness tests done and it’s always fun being the girl who does the most push ups in the room.
The SRC is still ridiculous though, good luck getting back into the swing of things when you have to wait 10 + min for a free squat rack or bench!
Woo hoo, a free A!
Welcome back!
Great to see you back.

Oh man. The SRC is my preferred gym by far…I take it the new year’s resolutioners haven’t given up yet. Guess I’ll keep going at weird times like 7 am or 10 pm.
Thanks for the lovely welcome back, everyone! I am currently shopping for a new program. If you are so inclined, post your favorites for review ![]()
I may be so inclined, these are the programs I have tried, disclaimer: all pros and cons are simply IN MY OPINION ONLY:
3 day bodybuilding split - I came up with this one on my own, 1-Chest and Back 2-Legs 3-Shoulders and Arms 4-off repeat - pros - it was intense and I put on a lot of mass really fast - cons - after a little over a month of this, my CNS was worn out
5/3/1 - pros - simple progression, easy to follow, not much specialized equipment needed, the assistance work can be tinkered with easily - cons - if powerlifting is your goal, the high reps without heavy singles can be counter productive (it was for me)
Westside Conjugate System (as per Elite FTS templates) - pros - have made great progress on the big 3, have been able to with time tailor it to my specific needs, can go on it for a long time without getting “bored” - cons - pure powerlifting, requires a ton of re tooling for other goals, to the point of no longer being Westside, requires a lot of special equipment (bands, boards, etc)
Hope this helps!

I follow 5-3-1 and it’s been working pretty well for me, my squat went up for the first time in a long time on it! It’s simple to follow and looking at potential lifting numbers by cycle 12 on the spreadsheet is pretty motivating. Also leaves a lot of freedom for choosing assistance work which I didn’t find on other programs, though I guess you could just modify those.
And the crowds have been getting progressively better since the first day back in class, but I’m pretty sure the worst times are like from 3-6. There’s usually a Spring Break rush too so get ready for that!
Yay! Plucky is back!

Welcome back…good luck this semester!
I do 5/3/1 and have for about 9 months or so. The biggest advantage for me is that I can taylor it to whatever my needs are at the time, right now I am focusing on conditioning and still do 5/3/1 with no issues. It is also nice to know that if I have to go in and just do the main moves and leave that I can and still be no worse off. Simple & effective works every time ![]()
MissPlucky…just an introduction. I was out of the gym for a LONG time due to injuries sustained defending this great land…
Sorry, I actually hate drama! Seriously it is awesome to get back into the gym and I’m sooooo happy to have found T-Nation. Awesome site. Also it’s good to see young folks getting into the gym. Keep up the great work and stay at it. It pays off in the end.
