Plucky Scares the Frat Boys

Good evening Powerful Women (and male visitors) my name is Sarah. Welcome to my first log =)
I’m 18 years old, 5’7, somewhere between 135 and 140 (yeah, I don’t get on a scale much). I’ve been reading T-Nation since I was twelve years old. I’m kinda mad that I waited til the “class of '09” to sign up…oh well.

Anyway, I’m starting a log because I just started my freshman year at UNC Chapel Hill (GO HEELS!)and I’m ready to, so to speak, get down to business. I’ve played around with weight lifting for a long time and this spring/summer it took a back seat to horseback riding, so I’m essentially approaching the game from scratch. SO excited. My only goal right now is to get stronger. Really that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

So…down to business. My “program” is something I’ve cooked up myself, because I feel like I’ve taken enough time to figure out what works for me and keeps me motivated. In fact, somebody else has probably designed something identical and named it, but for now I’ll just call it my “total halfsplitthing.” I alternate between a quad dominant+vertical push/pull day, and a hip dominant+horizontal push/pull day.

Just so I’m sure I hit all the angles! Being a college student, the diet thing is tricky, but I have an unlimited meal plan so I pop into the dining hall whenever I can and there is always at least one station with a meat and some veggies…not to mention I have my dorm room stocked with almonds, beef jerky, and protein bars. I’ll be bringing in Greek yogurt and protein powder asap. I need somebody to take me to a grocery store!
I love reading powerful women’s logs, and I promise if you hang out in mine I’ll hang out in yours :-)I think this will be a great motivator to keep myself accountable.

Entertaining pics and videos also appreciated (I’ll start working on that)
So, introductions, if you feel so inclined…
favorite lift?
favorite supp?
favorite witty expression?
favorite song to get you ready to rip some iron off the ground?

munches on almonds, yummy!

my decorating…hope this works…

my new supps…just came today…

mah proteins stash…

Welcome MissPlucky! I will begin the introductions…ahem

favorite lift? Well, it absolutely varies from week to week…I’m very dynamic like that. Right now, incline press. Of the big three, squats are my true love though our relationship is tumultous.

favorite supp? ON whey is my go to. It is not the most delicious, it is not the most luxurious, but it is the best bang for its buck and it dissolves in water like a dream. Also can’t live without my fish oil.

favorite witty expression? Crap, I dunno, it depends on the occasion really. “ummm thanks, its genetic”

favorite song to get you ready to rip some iron off the ground? My Domination by Symphony X or Stargazer by Rainbow, for fun pumpy dumbbell stuff I love the Cowboys from Hell album by Pantera or Rage Against the Machine

Thanks for the welcome Owlie! Your avi makes me giggle…
Being a poor college student, I’ll definitely have to try ON whey. Anything with a good value is the way to go!

I’m sitting in Starbucks in my pajamas right now. It’s attached to my dining hall, so I come in here almost every day…this morning the guy behind the counter recognized me and asked me as I walked up, “what size coffee will you be having today?” Then he gave me this cute little coffee passport thingy so I get stickers to put in it every time I try a new blend. Good lord I love coffee. This place is the best place to chill out, too, cause they play awesome jazz music and there are armchairs everywhere. There’s even a fireplace right in the middle!
–>Last night I had my first try of Superfood and Z12…I put the SF straight into some cold water and washed down a protein bar with it. Not bad-I liked the funky mix of fruity/veggie flavors. It seemed like the Z12 took a long time to kick in, but I definitely slept better last night. Hardly stirred when the roomie came in at godknowswhen o’clock. Overall, I’m pretty pleased.

Owlie- I was looking at some ON whey the other day at the store here on base. Thats good to know it dissolves well!!

Hi Miss Plucky! I’m a coffee junky too…how cool that its attached to your dining hall!

My intro:

favorite lift?****hmm, DL.

favorite supp?**** caffeine!!!

favorite witty expression?*** not sure, not feeling witty at the moment.

favorite song to get you ready to rip some iron off the ground?

Right now:

anything Sevendust for that matter, haha.

Hi!

Just popping in to say welcome. Good to see young women lifting.

@Owlie: I am in total agreement with ON whey. Good stuff.

@MiM: OMG, I haven’t listened to sevendust in forever. Must. Put. On. Ipod. I just went to go look for ‘home’ in the CD rack (which, btw, my husband does not keep alphabetized…grrr), and it was right there, the first one on top! YAY

Fav lift: depends on mood, usually anything back related.

Supp: caffeine and fish oiL, but not together XP

Quote: Currently fond of "You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself. " - Galileo Galilei

Song: Eminem, “Won’t Back Down” or Godsmack, “I Stand Alone”

Hey Plucky, better late than never to join huh?
Seriously glad to have you on board with us, your entries are very pleasant and calming to read.
Your decorating skills can’t go wrong with Bed Bath & Beyond. It’s actually very cozy-looking, better yet it’s a DORM.

As for me…
Favorite lift: Everything I do. I even love the exercises that I “hate”.
Favorite supp: Creatine
Quote: “It’s fear that keeps people from reaching goals, but I believe in myself.”
Song: Breaking Benjamin “I Will Not Bow”

MiM- I love Sevendust!
Doc- thanks for the welcome, I am a huge fan of back exercises myself. I’m definitely more of a pull than a push person.
Nikki- why thank you very much ma’am! I love words and writing so I guess this is the place for me to be huh? As for my decorating, I only stumbled on a passion for housekeeping very recently…this might be the first time I’ve maintained my sleeping area in a manner that enables one to make it to the bed in a straight line, without kicking a laundry basket or a saddle or something. My room mate’s side, on the other hand, is another story…

was just here…it was too hot…

MissPlucky, you’ve definitely posted in the appropriate forum. Plenty of excellent role models from which to choose and skim info/advice. From your avi it looks like you’ve got a solid foundation. Off the top of my head check out Owlie, Mascherano, AlisaV, Onmyown32, Cbear84, DebraD, and Pushmepullme to name a few. We mustn’t forget Mom-in-md and Nikki above. Good luck.

Thank you very much for the tips zinck-and the compliments
I’m veeerrry happy to be here!

Hi! Welcome to the forum!
I’m looking forward to following along!

Fav lift: that’s a toughie, but I’m going to go with chin-ups - not necessarily because I enjoy them the most, but because there is an awesome factor to being able to do them.

Fav supp: I don’t take much for supplements, but I do love a glass of chocolate milk after a workout.

Fav quote: “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally used up and loudly proclaiming ‘WOW, what a ride!’” - dunno?

Fav pre lift song: Changes but I’m really digging Epica and After Forever to get me all pumped up.

Hey now, not all fraternity men are douches haha, I am proud to be a Sigma Chi.

Welcome to the nation, enjoy your college years (I just finished mine, already miss em), and good luck with the lifting, I look forward to following.

Ahem…

favorite lift? - Deadlift - there is just something satisfying about doing it
favorite supp? - Redline pre workout (gives me a good kick after bein in Law classes all day)
favorite witty expression? - Today is a good day to die…and of course, U MAD?
favorite song to get you ready to rip some iron off the ground? - Die MF Die by Dope

Hey there, welcome aboard!

Fave lift: deadlifts. I just like heaving the big stuff.
favorite supplement: oh I’ve never really used any. Maybe I’m missing out?
Favorite quote: right now, “Listen to the fools reproach! It is a kingly title!” (Blake.)
Favorite song to get you ready: “Spanish Bombs,” by The Clash.

I had to comment on this because mine are
Lift: Dead
Supp: Redline
Expression: Okay I don’t have one
Not necessarily fave song but on the playlist: Die MF Die.

I felt like a special snowflake until I read that. Way to crap on my happiness.

great minds think alike?

fave lift- deadlift

supp- im not too discriminatory when it comes to drugs. i like most of them.

witty saying- everything that comes out of my mouth is witty, and i am my biggest fan.

song- usually doesnt do it for me. a trip to walmart does.

2 things- everyone i’ve met from chapel hill has been lovely, so im sure youre in good company. – i cant see your blackout curtains.

LastStand- I like the quote!

DixiesFinest- wish there were more of 'em originating from a forum like this one…you in law school? I think corporate law would really float my boat.

Ouroboro- you’re a very special snowflake. I love deadlifts too…

CBear- I am astonished every day by the pure awesomeness of the general population here; the class I graduated high school with was 90% complete assholes.
Blackout curtains? I sleep with a facemask and earplugs cause my roomie has a totally screwy sleep schedule, which made things extra confusing last night when the fire alarm went off at midnight and I was in a Z12 induced coma.
Of course there was no fire, somebody decided it would be extra awesome to schedule a drill when everybody was in pajamas or lacking bras or wasted. I was so groggy and confused I let myself be talked into a study session for linguistics today at 2…dammit…

This weekend I ate like a heartbroken fat kid. I resolve that this week I will eat a bowl of green leafy things every day as penance.
Yes, I do work out sometimes, promise!
