You are one tuff guy QT.I hope you feel better soon.God Bless.
Glad you caught it at this stage and really hope the meds get it under control. Bland diet, huh. Think I remember you saying the wife mentioned you had put on a little extra. This could be a blessing in disguise. Stay strong. Praying for you.
Hope you are feelin’ better QT.
Keep a grip on the GERD. I am in the same boat as you… cancer took my dad at 50 (esophagal/ stomach) and I am on meds now for the same thing (must be genetics).
Two words… F*** CANCER!
It was a blessing talking to you on the phone. It’s the small things in life that are a blessing. Art, be a stud because you are a stud. The Missouri Mule can’t wait to give you a bear hug. We’re going to throw some iron around, SOON. Take care my friend and tell Betty not to worry, I’ll cook.
THANKS EVERYONE!!!
Weight down to 207 after a 3-day weekend of eating like I had two assholes…want to keep losing maybe 1lb per week so by summer’s end be close to 198-200, and then try to go further!
Damn QT…that’s fucked up! Take care buddy, I don’t know shit about C, but it sounds like you’re on the right track.
Art, I hope the weight works in your plans, makes me feel tooooo fat even though I’m much prettier. Tomorrow i’m having my one doc look at your photos. give Betty a hug and tell your step son when he turns 50 to remember what you were lifting. Bless ya bro.
How’s my friend’s health? I hope your father’s day was great. Mine sucked but that’s on me. The best to ya.
Thanks Barry. My Father’s Day was spent on Sat…I traveled up to Westchester County in NY to visit my sister who was hosting a family get-together. She owns a bar and opened early & gave us free access to all the pinball & video games, darts, pool, food. etc. My Dad and my son & daughter were there so it was a great weekend for me.
School finishes up tomorrow(Fri) and my summer job starts on Sat. I hope being outside in the heat and salt air helps with my weight loss. I will certainly miss the strength I have acquired at this weight, but I have resigned myself to losing weight and probably strength as well.
Once my weight stabilizes I will work on getting my strength back, if that is even possible. I am trying to maintain it now, but feel I’m fighting a losing battle. My workout log is telling me things already, BUT I am keeping an open mind for what the future holds. Be well, my Brother in Iron, and do your thing like it’s never been done before!!!
You’ve been doing this too long not to get back to where you were except for the weight loss. Eat like me and lift like Jimmy T. Give Betty a hug and hit the iron.
QT, Every now and then the thought crosses my mind to do a little bodybuilding, really do something about a diet, and get looking a little better. Having never lifted weighing more and then losing weight, does it noticably affect you’re strength levels? Guess it depends on how much you loose.
QT, little by little I’m getting around to checking in on how my friends are doing and being less consumed in my own problems. Sorry to hear about your GI problems, but I can share with you some thoughts I have since I have had hundreds of patients with these same problems.
First thing, I have found most folks find Prevacid the best antacid, followed next by Nexium/Prilosec. Prevacid is quite expensive however, Prilosec is 90% as good and if you take two its just as good as Prevacid.
Secondly, you will get all sorts of conflicting dietary guidelines which can drive you crazy. As usual, many doctors dont know what the hell theyre talking about, so you have to be your own best advocate for knowledge. One thing is clear to me, a more alkaline diet is better for your condition, probably better for all of us. Look up alkaline diet, it is somewhat surprising which foods create an acidic response and which dont. Then, you have to find how to get your protein in without flaring up any part of your GI tract. The longer I have been thinking about this issue, I have to reluctantly conclude us protein-addicted lifters and bodybuilders do not do our GI tracts any favors by cramming 300 grams a day of various meats and powders, etc. A friend of mine got kidney failure from his overzealous intake of protein.
Of course, there are real villains out there for the GI tract, the top two being alcohol and the many prescription meds!
I know with your positive attitude you will make the diet and lifestyle changes you need and your GI problems should be manageable. As I hope you know, the conversion rate of Barrett’s to cancer is only 1%, and I would dare say many of that group are not doing the things they need to do to correct the situation.
Good luck and let me know if I can help.
Doc
08/28/08 - Had my follow-up endoscopy done yesterday(didn’t get around to posting it until today, Labor Day). Got good news and bad…good news is that all the old ulcerations had healed fully; bad news is that I got a few fresh ones so my GERD still isn’t quite under control. I only had 2 bouts at night over the last 8 weeks and wasn’t aware of any attacks during the day, but I guess stomach acid is still finding its way up my esophagus!
Doc thanks for the advice(even though the thanks is several months after your last post. My prescription plan won’t pay for the meds you recommended; so I’m “stuck” with Protonix twice a day now. Scheduled for another endoscopy before Thanksgiving, hopefully my last one for awhile.
Got some new “toys” - a set of weight releasers I won on E-Bay and a knock-off copy of those rotating push-up handles.
My best to the gang - will try to ctach up on everyone’s threads in the next week or two. Hope all is well…c ya soon!
It sure is good hearing from you.Been thinking about you for a long time.God bless you brother.
Hey Brother,
Just saw your post and it caught my interest becasue I’m an over 50 PL myself (along with my wife!)
Currently recovering from a torn bicep tendon. Had surgery back in June and coming along nicely. My wife just competed in St Louis and took first in her masters class, but tore her rotator cuff doing it. SO, we’re both on the mend!
Saw some of your medical background and I can realte. Got a whole lot of the same myself…but it sure isn’t going to stop us, is it? ![]()
We’ll keep in touch!

Hey Frank,
I post my workouts on HT’s what the hell am I doing thread. We have some similarities…I tore both L & R distal bicep tendons with corrective surgeries for both. I had a complete rotator cuff tear, repaired with surgery, with less than 100% recovery, & just recently sustained a minor Pec tear. Good luck to yoy and your wife!
Hey QT great to hear from you. We’ve missed you! Hope things work out, and the bad news is just temporary.
