PL Training for Master's Nats

This thread will never die. We won’t let it. I’m sore too my bro.

Tweaked my Pec a couple of weeks ago…USAPL NJ States on 03/22/08 just a 20 minute drive down the road for me…hope i can hold together 'till then.

Got some new “toys” today. Two big tractor tires & a 16lb. sledge, along with a 135lb steel anvil. One tire for flippin’; the other I will hit with the sledge. The anvil has concave sides so it lends itself well to carrying. I may set up a ‘course’ to utilize all as a complex and repeat as my conditioning, or lack of it, allows!
Hope all is well with my Brothers in Iron!

Awesome stuff QT, please post pics.

When I’m practicing for the Javelin, which isn’t real often, I have a tire mounted high on a pole. Use a 16# sledge to do 2 handed over headed hits to it. Great for that pulling motion. I still suck at the javelin but its a great shoulder/back workout.

Still have fantasies of competing in the NJ USAPL States in late March. I think I should go and just have fun and see some old friends and make some new ones.

Hey bro, I hope you get better. Your friendship has and is a inspiration to me and others. I know what you do at the schools is underpaid and is thankless. I’m proud to call you my friend. Take care, TRAIN HARD, and give the family my best.

Go for it. This is what keeps me competing. Let’s face it, there’s not a whole lot of people we associate with on a daily basis that really understand why we do what we do at our age. It’s great when you’re with people who understand without explanation. Same reason I started hanging out on this site.

Go for it brother!

Hey QT, would you compete with shirt etc.or raw?

Originally, I planned to use a singlet, belt, & wraps in the squat, before I injured my Pec, I was planning on using a BP shirt I got for Christmas(Now I’m not so sure I’ll be using it), and just DL in singlet with no belt. Becaquse of the knee wraps, I won’t be competing “raw”. I am aklso considering the Tactical Strength Challenge in April.

Eh? New one for me. What’s it involve? Sounds fun.

Deadlift - 3 attempts
Pull-ups - BW x failure throat has to touch bar
Kettlebell Snatch - Max reps 5 mins timed; can use L or R arm or switch arms as often as you want
tacticalstrengthchallenge.com/ for locations, rules, past results, etc

hel - I believe there is one in Auburn, AL - I don’t know if that’s near you or not, but maybe check it out as a spectator, or, compete for shits and giggles! Best of Luck!

Hey ol’ buddy, how’s the boob comin’ along? I’m so ready for Spring. The ice storms have been messed up. The best to you and the family.

Sorry took so long for pics of new ‘toys’…old camera not working so I had to use Betty’s.

Tire for hitting with sledge & flipping in side yard.

20 pound sledge and 135 pound anvil

Where did you find the anvil? Looks like you’re all set up for some fun.

Damn that yard looks well worn! Is that a fire pit or a crater from your training? Wife threatens to take my toys away if I destroy the yard. I’m curious too about that anvil.

The anvil came from one of my son’s friends who had it rusting in a barn. We wire brushed it and sprayed some paint on it & it’s good to go! What’s neat about it is that the sides are concave and it makes it slightly more comfortable to put your arms around it to hold it next to your body. While I have no trouble lifting and cradling it, when I walk with it I feel it terribly in my lower back/glute/upper hamstring for some unknown reason.

My son set up a ‘circuit’ consisting of the anvil walk from the side of the house to the tire and back, place anvil in wheelbarrow and follow same course, jog to tire and hit it 20 times from each side, then throw tree stomps over right shoulder, overhead/backwards, then over left shoulder, then take a break and repeat until you get tired or bored whichever comes first(tired for me!)

The ‘crater’ was a fire pit which we can no longer use. Last year, and errant flare from a fighter jet using the nearby bombing range caused a huge forest fire and thousands of acres were burned. We were nearly evacuated the fire was so close. Since then, no permits for fires on private property have been granted by the local fire marshalls, for good reason!
I have no trouble swinging the sledge from the right side, BUT I do have some trouble/weakness/awkwardness swinging from my non-dominant left side. Have to work on it as it is noticably harder & quickly fatiguing!
