PL Training for Master's Nats

Have a complete physical scheduled with blood work on Saturday…just to satisfy requirement for work & to keep tabs on what’s happening, if anything, on the insides!

I hope you studied for the tests,HA.

As expected, my blood work-up was all within normal limits. My fasting cholesterol was 165, total triglycerides was 135, HDL’s were 45, yadda, yadda, yadda!

My physical was unremarkable except for the number of migraines AND my knee is infected and antibiotics were prescribed. If and when the swelling finally goes down, I will start squatting, DLing and running again…my weight is up around 207-209 and I don’t like it there.
A CT scan may be done for my sinuses to see if that is the cause of the frequent migraines. All-in-all, I am pleased that by their criteria, I am still a healthy individual.

Hope all is well; I am slightly depressed about the summer coming to an end and I will be going back to working two jobs again!

This weekend my kids go back to their Mom in NYC…I’m depressed about that & all these tiny setbacks physically I’ve had in the last month or so. When I was a kid, the summer seemed to last soooo long! Now as an adult, it goes faster & faster the older I get it seems.

I look back over the last 8-10 weeks they were here, & say to myself, “What did we do?” “Did they have fun?” “Do they still wanna spend time with me?” They both are getting older & want to be with their friends more & me less. I try to keep them stimulated, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s enough anymore. What’s a part-time dad to do???

Be Art, be positive and spend damm little time dwelling on the what if. Read Dr Wayne Dyer, “There’s A Spritual Solution to Every Problem”. I put a couple of lame videos on my profile. Just having fun. My friend is a photographer and the files are huge, all i wanted was some stills and he went nuts! Take care my brother.

THANKS BARRY!!! Keep the videos coming…I will try to find someone to video some of my upcoming workouts as well.

Hey QT, haven’t had the opportunity to read you entire log yet, but just wanted to say hello. I’m 46, and just started to post a log here. I’m guessing we’re about the same size, I’m about 200 right now. Best of luck to you with those issues you’ve got going on. Chin up, it’ll work out fine!

Got a CAT scan of sinuses this morning…had to fill out a questionnaire prior to getting scan…asked about surgeries/injuries; I know we all, especially HT recently, have had our share of injuries, wanna compare notes just for shits and giggles???

Tear in rectum from pressures squatting with suit etc - surgery 100% recovered

Prolapsed discs L3-L5 doing an “a 315lb upright row” when my training partner dropped the bar on his chest doing a thumbless grip BP - 85% recovery

Left Distal Bicep Tendon tear/reconstruction - kid at school sliced me with a knife and severed tendon…surgery and 99.9% recovered

Right Distal Bicep tendon tear/reconstruction - DLing 575x2 10 days before a PL contest - surgery and 98% recovery

Complete Rotator Cuff tear/reconstruction - chronic night pain for months; knew something not right; BPing 315x10 and went on 8th rep - dislocated GH joint and Superior Labral tear as well. Surgery involved cutting of some ligs as well, &, shaving clavicle - surgery and ~65% recovery is my guesstimate

Pre-patellar bursitis and joint infection - chronic - usually 100% recovery bet bouts
Countless aches and pains & soreness, yadda, yadda, yadda!

art, what is going on with your knee? did you not just getover an abscess n the neither regions?

as far as the kids and all, boy, you really said a lot. i hjave many of the same feelings, my two are young(10 and 8) and still want to be around daddy, but there will be a time very soon that they will want to be with their friends for the summer not me.

i try to pack a whole years worth of experiences in a few weeks, and by the time they go, we are all exhausted. they have not been gone quite a month yet and i am already missing them terrible.

Michael,
My “groin” abcess healed up fine; from kneeling at work, probably on a crab contaminated crab shell, I got an infection along with the bursitis. The bursitis is slowly going away; the infection lingered…I have to go back to doc this week to re-evaluate my progress or lack of it. My leg, ankle foot are now swollen as well and the front of my shin is real sensitive to touch/pressure…I have cabin fever and will sneak in a lower body workout this week…to be continued

CAT scan showed sinuses with no infection; migraines from some other source.
Follow-up appt. on Friday for knee which is still hot and swollen…tried to run/jog yesterday, made only 8 minutes before I gave up - too uncomfortable!

Hey QT, I just finished reading your thread from start to finish. To me, it is very inspirtational, in many ways. You of course are strong and smart in your training. But I most admire and respect the commaraderie that evolved between yourself, Jimmy T, HT and BarryJ. I remember in my heavy lifting days that for the most part, I was a loner, and good training partners were few and far between.

I wrote down about twenty questions I have from things you guys have said and done, and feel like a nube despite having been a strong lifter in my youth.

Another thing I gained from this thread is belief of what is possible at our age. Everyone is banged up and sewn up to one degree or another, but all of you guys find a way to overcome.

I hope to return to serious powerlifting as well as seeing what I can do with OL. I only just reconditioned myself enough to squat and deadlift, but my left shoulder isn't quite ready for benching (other than the faux bench machine). If you'll indugle one question, how does a lifting shirt help with shoulder recovery, and is something special about the Inzers?

Thanks already for throwing a few posts my way, and although I enjoy throwing some oddball humor out in my thread, I'd rather be throwing out great workouts like you guys.
                              Doc

Hi Dr. PC,

I keep trying to let this thread die, but it keeps coming back to life, LOL!!! I post my stuff on HT’s thread now, but from time-to-time I add a tidbit on this one.

Ask whatever questions you have of us; we are all extremely candid…all of us have shared our past & present experiences with one another & we have formed quite a strong cyber-bond. You are more than welcome to add any and all input.

I train alone for the most part in my garage, & I believe HT does too. Jimmy and Barry train both solo and with a partner when convenient. I like the convenience of the garage and have sacrificed the push that comes from a good & stronger training partner.

My ego is still getting the better of me at 51, even the thought of equaling past performances may be beyond my reach in reality but not in my fantasy world. But it drives me to try to train harder, or train when I want to do something else. The only things that stop me from training are my family and work for the most part. I seem to juggle daily life, family, two jobs and training OK.

I am a poor resource when it comes to shirt use of present. To some extent, they are a ‘crutch’ but seem to have a place both in training and competition. I used an ill-fitting one for a couple of training cycles and 1 recent competition, but I am far from an expert. HT and Jimmy might provide more insight to their use. There are many different models on the market and the pros and cons of each I know nothing about. I laugh because I bench in training raw more than I benched shirted in the competition to put things in perspective, lol!

I am still trying to rehab my shoulder 2 years after surgery. My best guess is that I am at 65% of my good side with progress coming very slowly, maybe 1-2% per year. My surgeon said I’d be lucky to do a push-up, so I guess I’m way ahead of the game and should be content…but I’m not!

Another lifter who posts in the Strength Sports forum who is older and more knowledgable than I is PLer Jack Reape…look for his Quest for Elite thread. He may be able to answer your shirt questions if HT and Jimmy are not able to. Good Luck with your comeback & looking forward to yours posts.

Thanks for the comments, QT. You’re too modest. Don’t you just love surgeons and their “prognoses?” If I had fully listened to them, I’d be in a wheelchair now sipping my Ensure. Maybe they do us an unintentioned favor telling us what we can’t do, because that is a great motivator.
I was told I’d never be able to lift heavy weights after my right shoulder surgery, 11 years ago and before my car accident. My right shoulder now might be the best joint I have going.
But my left is coming back slower than expected, given I’ve got a pinpoint scar on that one and a zipper on the right. It’s the same battle, you know it: pain, inflexibility, and relative weakness. I will say I got a better stretching movement that’s helped recently. Besides all the cross arm, behind your back and over your head stretches, a good PT showed me how to use a broomstick to push the arm up and back to the position you catch a snatch with. That has helped me in this past month, and today I was able to do push presses behind the neck with some weight for the first time. Until today I was lucky to get through my standing front presses.
I appreciated your comments about ego and dreams of lifting near lifetime PR’s again. I feel like dreaming about mine, and my powerlift PR’s were 600/420/600 in my prime at 23 and at 280lbs. I took those lifts for granted, even though I worked hard for them. Although I love the C@J beyond reason, powerlifting was obviously to me the clearer indicator of pure strength, and I actually like PL’s more in general, usually down to earth guys who are all-around strong. OL’s often are really, really “different,” and sometimes have a chip on their shoulder because their sport is slowly dying. But I can’t fathom how PL’s today are doing near 1000 in all three lifts now…that’s kind of depressing. I’m sure it’s more than because of their shirts.
I have no clue how far I’ll get, and it probably doesn’t mean a hill of beans to anybody. However, keeping up with other diehards on similar journeys is a big help, as well as just being able to shoot the breeze with guys who have heavy lifting in their blood. I’ve realized the passion for this sport, if you really have it, you can’t ignore it. Rant and rambling over.
BTW, I’ll bump your thread up again if you try to let it die. Doc

THIS THREAD WILL NEVER DIE.

Computers!!!It’s time for my fav quote:

“My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my guide is reliable, my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate… at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in a maze of mediocrity. I won’t give up, shut up, let up, or slow up.”~ Robert Moorehead
I love HT and his thread, but this is where we met. Can’t sleep stressed. I will later today try and brake myself down. Who else asks his buddy’s kid if he can push his truck around the block. No form needed, didn’t feel like paying for the gym. I go and entertain the bastards and pay 5.00. YOU’LL LOVE THIS, I got a 2 week Bally;s free pass. I used to go to this place. My new personal trainer Paul is going to train me Monday.HAAAAAA Wait til he finds out his 52YO overweight flunky is bringing chalk and won’t use a belt til 455. I guess it’s good we now got a shrink. Picked up a fresh bunch of supps today. God Bless the crew. No Injuries.

Barry

I really admire your choices of quotes; quite frankly, they are probably a true reflection of who YOU are! They always seem to give me goosebumps as I read them…that’s how inspiring I find them. I hope the workouts with your new partner are productive and get you closer to the goals you aspire to! Good luck & let us know how they go!

Barry, the shrink is watching, and enjoying both your motivational quotes and and your funny situations with the artsy-fartsy gyms. Make sure you holler loud and leave a big puddle of sweat and chalk for me. Doc

Doc, glad you’re with us. I worked out at this gym 10 years ago. I try and view machines as stacking only. This young man is in shock and this old man is having a little fun. I have no intention of joining this joint, toooo artsy fartsy. The babes at this place are great. My last workout I’m going to have one stand on the stack of the seated row. Just having fun and stroking the ego.

Put three of 'em on the leg press. And be careful what you stroke.
