Would dissolving pills (vitamin C, multivitamins, Zinc, ect) in water make them more effective because more of them would get absorbed?
probably since the stomach will have less of a hard time breaking them down. I wonder how nasty they would taste like if you mixed them in water though.
I wonder if the binders & fillers would settle to the bottom of the glass & there’d only be the good stuff in the solution? Sounds like maybe a good idea if that’s true.
Hello. First off, I feel that I should introduce myself. I am a student in my second year of pharmacy school working towards my PharmD degree. Normally, I would not respond to an inquiry, but yours seemed to have some validity. You can take my advice or see it as some science jargon, but the way I see it, your question has more in chemistry & stability than one might think. Unfortunately, I believe that there is no simple answer to your question. It is agent specific. Let me explain,Yes, Vitamin C is soluble (about 1g per 3ml) in water, but unfortunately it will be oxized rapidly and needs to be protected from light. On the other hand, it will aid in the absoption of iron. For example, patients withan iron deficiency are often told to take their iron supplement with a glass of orange juice. This is just one example of an agent being aided (or inhibited for that matter) by another. Every vitamin/supplement is unique in its absorption and stability characteristics. Unfortunately, there is no “gold standard” to follow. If I can, let me suggest some references to consult when questioning extemporaneous formulations (especially since I am not aware of your underlying goal):
paddocklabs.com /secundum/secart73.html (this is a good reference of the basic principles of stability)
http://www.dal.ca/ ~pharmwww/compound/ (This site also has some interesting formulations of testosterone, if you are interested)
http://www.ijpc.com
Some books you may be able to find at your local library:
Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy (excellent resource on the stability of drugs in many mediums)
Drug Information Handbook
I hope that this led you in the right direction. If you have any other questions concerning this matter, please feel free to email me.

Wow why aren’t you in here more often?? That was some cool stuff!
Capsules dissolve faster than ‘pills’ do, I crush caps or pills a bit with my teeth before I swallow them to press the air out or crack the binder coating surfaces, dissolving your vitamins in water will taste nasty and only marginaly more effective, and as said before will oxidize rapidly, if your male you don’t want to absorb more iron anyways.
Kathryn, I agree with Drax - very cool stuff! Most of us meatheads don’t have a good background in chemistry but really want to know about this stuff and really appreciate the help. Your comments would always be appreciated and respected. Looking forward to seeing more posts with your respected knowledge.
