I picked up a few Star Wars books, and they sucked. Any suggestions on good reads, authors?
I only really liked Shadows of the Empire cause, since it was an interquel, it didn’t ruin any mythos or add too many stupid characters.
I actually liked many of the characters introduced, and expanded upon, in the books, especially Corran Horn, Wedge Antilles, Jaina Solo, Gavin Darklighter, and Pellaeon. The problem with the books was instead of continuing to actually expand the universe and really develop characters in it. They just kept making Luke Skywalker more and more powerful, and having Han, Leia and sometimes Lando solve everything.
I really liked the X-wing series because it did attempt to establish and grow more characters, and barely involved the main characters from the movies, but they just let them fade into the background and become secondary characters in the later books and went back to focusing on the characters from the movies.
Who was the guy that stole the suncrusher? Cause I actually had some interest in him.
The interquel thing for me just works better, in my mind I like to watch Return of the Jedi and know thats it done - the Empire is gone. However, with the books you have garbage like the emperors clone and Joras C’boath (sp?) which makes that satisfying ending of ROTJ kinda meh.
I did like Prime Vector (or whatever it was called) just cause the Yuzhuan Vong were kinda cool.

Kyp Durron was the guy who took the Sun Crusher. He was a good character, and the various authors spent a lot of time developing him in the New Jedi Order, even to the point of making him a viable replacement for Luke, but after the New Jedi Order series he just vanished except for random mentions as to where he was instead of helping out, and the occasional appearance during big Jedi meetings.
Also, the clone emperor, while in the same continuity as the books and movies, was a comic book storyline and those were all preposterous, and Joruus C’baoth was never a main enemy. He was just there as a catalyst to develop Mara Jade as a character. He also did have some funny interactions with Thrawn.
I really liked the New Jedi Order because it took the focus off of increasingly ridiculous Jedi powers and brought in a real threat that took others to solve. Plus, it used the authors of the X-wing series a lot and they understood the importance of letting go of the movie characters and having other people solve problems and develop.
