So what do I do guys im stumped, I want to be huge and strong and athletic for MMA but at the same time I want a great physique. i feel like if I just powerlift i will see my muscle definition go away and I dont want that considering how summer is 4 months away. I weigh 192 and am 6’2 with 11% BF My lifts are bench 320 squat 380 deadlift 405. So what should I do guys i was reading you have to build the house before you paint it which i think was a great quote.
after reading through the thread, i realize i agree and disagree on various points…
while i admit that training for bodybuilding is not conducive for MMA, a good physique still matters in MMA. several guys i know that tried out for TUF are technically solid fighters, but didn’t have the right “look.”
and many of the big name fighters with a ton of sponsor money in the UFC happen to have great physiques… GSP, Brock, etc. now they prolly developed their builds by training, and it was more a by product of what they were doing, but i have no doubt GSP would have none of his money if he was built like BJ Penn.
i’m not that worried about the size of my arms, or having a six pack, but i don’t think it’s vain to admit that i wanna look good for my wife.
just my .02.
You’re right. No offence, it is just .02
Seriously, absolute bullshit. If GSP looked like big daddy but fought the same, then he would still be at the top of his game. Heck it may even bring in a whole level of fans who can identify with the body image.
I guarantee you your friends were not ‘solid’ enough fighters if they didn’t make it or they have the personalities of brown paper bags.

Like Roy Nelson. Who would want to look like that guy? However, the dude can knock people the f out and has a chin of granite. He’s also not to shabby on the ground. All of those traits are pretty good to have if you look like you belong in a Burger King instead of on a mat. However, he is a rarity in this sport. Top teir MMA guys have realized that doing the right type of strength training is very beneficial in MMA. I don’t think their ultimate goal is to be ripped up like a bodybuilder but if you weight train enough, put your time in on a mat,and eat clean, your by-product will be a pretty defined looking body. i’m a big fan of Roy, but even i have a better physique than he does… i suspect that’s part of why Uncle Dana has been so critical of him.
i think, whether people want to admit it or not, they like their athletes to have cartoonish features, or at least look different than the average person. Cheick Kongo has quite a following, but isn’t all that great… but he looks hella scary.
again, i’m not saying that sport specific training isn’t more beneficial for actual performance, i’m simply saying that appearance does matter in MMA (or pretty much any sport, for that matter)…
