Physique Clinic discussion for Barti

I totally agree with what mikedebo said. Good advice. I used to do a fair bit of distance running and I tend to roll me feet out too. Ankle mobility and foam rolling the sides of my thighs really helped. As did massaging my VM’s. Hope the knee clears up soon dude, ive dropped into your thread every few weeks and you have made an awesome improvement. Your thread is also really easy to read unlike some of the others.

About the knee:

You have ridiculously awesome coaches on your side, so I’m not going to pretend to be more helpful than they. I just wanted to say that I experienced what seems like the EXACT injury you’re describing about 4 years ago.

I was on mile eight of a fifteen mile run when it felt like someone had stabbed me on the outer part of my left knee, and it stiffened up like crazy on the hobble home.

I went to a couple of physiotherapists… they told me my IT band was shortening and producing excess tension at the insertion points. Also, my glutes weren’t activating enough during my stride, and I was rolling on the outside of my foot when I ran. I have no idea how accurate their assessment was, but my own research didn’t drum up a better reason for it.

I incorporated more glute stretches, IT band stretches, and I made sure my ass was literally in gear when I was running. Also, at the time I was running on a lot of country roads where the shoulder is curved to allow for drainage, which means my left leg was always running on a slant relative to my right. Finally, I found that being really strict about landing on the ball of my foot (instead of the heel) kept things a lot more comfortable.

Anyhow, after paying attention to small details like these for a year or so, I was able to get to the point where my knee didn’t stiffen at all when I ran. I’d like to think that all the squatting helped too

Hopefully some small part of that is of help to you. I’m also (selfishly) hoping that someone on this thread will realize my real problem and call me nine kinds of dumbass, so I can learn more about what may have really happened

Rock on, dude. It is awesomely motivating to watch your progress.

P.S.

You know all these ‘now that I’m not fat’ experiences you’ve been having? Reminds me of one of my own – after I lost my gut, I went to help a buddy move out of his apartment. Turns out that I was really accustomed to propping moving boxes on top of my gut when doing this kind of work. I dropped about three boxes before I realized that the reason for my apparent clumsiness was my missing paunch  So, watch out for that if you’re ever in the same situation.

OK, I’m done now.[/quote]

Dear Dumbass,

Man, that is exactly the same thing that happened to me and your running style mirrors mine. I have really been trying to “loosen” my glutes, hammy’s and hip flexors. Those have always been the tightest. I also have been soft tissue rolling the shit out of my IT band. It hurts. Badly. But oh so nice.

I have tried to focus my running style more on the balls of my feet, but am not very consistent with it.

BTW…just kidding about the dumbass comment, but you set yourself up for that one. rookie dumbass (there’s two, only 7 more to go!)

Thanks Dave. The ankle mobility and foam rolling have helped a lot since I started this program, thats why I was surprised by what happened on that running session. I know that everyone is susceptible to injury but my knee’s were finally feeling good while running, so it really bummed me out.

Thanks for stopping by when you get a chance. Every hit on my thread means a lot.

Here’s my input on the knee. You have built enough of a fitness base that you could still do the tri even if you did no running from here on in. Can you still ride? If all you do is swim and ride, you’ll be good. Even if you can’t ride that much, you’ll still be good.

I feel the same way. I think if I increase my swimming frequency, that it will help with my wind and by biking it will only help build strength in the knee. Lets hope that Thibs agree’s.

Bartl, the NOFX show sounded great! I’m not going to lie and say I go to many concerts, I’m usually playing hockey on friday nights and weekends!

Coming from a full time performance athlete, my two cents is to let this triathlon go. There will be more opportunities to do it. Let it get healthy and live to fight another day. This isn’t one of the times where you should be called a bitch and to suck it up. This is a case where you couldn’t get through 40 seconds. I’m going to have to go with wait it out personally. You get one body, and if you fuck it up it’s a lot harder to fix than to find another triathlon.

If I lived in your neck of the woods, I would be playing hockey on Friday nights and weekends as well. I don’t usually go to many shows any more unless they are on weekends, but NOFX is on you can’t pass up on any night of the week.

I appreciate your honest regarding the race too. Nothing wrong with speaking your two cents and its something I’m considering.

Bartl,
Thanks for the comment in my section! Great job on the fat loss, let alone training for a triathlon! Most people in your shoes a few months ago couldn’t even dream of being able to do a triathlon in 2 years let alone a few months!

Sorry to hear about your injury though. I saw you plan on going through with the race so I think Tiger Balm may become your best friend haha.

Good luck!!
CP

hey man its been awhile since ive chimmed in on your thread but i have still been following it…hope the knee heals up in time for the race…i know what you mean when you say that you have come to far to give it up now…and one quick question…do you or anyone else on here have any idea how smoking effects weight loss?? I know how it effects cardio but my damn football coach used to run with us while smoking marlboro reds and would blow the smoke in our face…so yeah any input would be great

can’t help you withe smoking question, but keep this in mind: I smoked for 14 years and was fat the whole time, no matter how hard I trained. Look at me 5 months after quiting smoking and dialing in my training.

Back when I was in the army, one guy actually HAD to smoke while he did his 2mile run for the physical fitness test. If he didnt smoke the whole race he’d fail the run. It was most bizzare to watch.

We may have known the same guy. This guy actually took a smoke between the push ups/sit ups and the run because he needed to get “fired up,” and he was able to run two miles in under 13 minutes. Insane.

Here’s a helpful tip: after you use Tiger Balm, make sure you wash your hands really, really well before you take a pee. Unless, of course, you happen to like a burning sensation.

even then washing the hands doesn’t work so well. case in point, I was using Biofreeze the other night, washed my hands, itched my balls and 10 minutes later my boys were in the antarctic. weird

Hey Bartl. You just have to stay positive and think how much worse it could be. Revel in the fact that you are able to train intensely at all. Hopefully you WILL be able to do this race. It doesn’t sound like your injruy is too terrible. But if not, there WILL be OTHER races. Right now, I have an abdominal strain and have done no exercise for a week. I just saw a top sports medicine doc who works with Michigan’s football and hockey teams extensisvely and is known for being fairly agressive and getting athletes healthy again quickly. He told me I should do ZERO exercise for at least two more weeks and then ease back in.

I was also getting ready to get back into racing. I ran track in college and was beginning training again in that way, looking to get back into racing the 800. So, it is extremely frustrating. But even being forced to be totally sedentary, I try to remind myself that being out for a few weeks is better than really messing myself up and being out for months. I WILL be back in the gym. And I will also live to race another day.

Great advice jsbrook. I don’t know if I could be sedentary leading up to the race or even at all for that matter. I give you kudo’s for being able to do nothing at all.

So, does the Surge Workout Fuel provide you any benefit? I see you and Shugs using it, but I don’t see it in the store. Are they using you to evaluate it?
