He was magic before Magic. He was the player Bird wanted to be.

Ha! I like that one alot, magic before Magic. Nice! I’ve heard he & Bird didn’t get along too well. I was a big Bird fan back in his days, and I can easily see him being a big ass hole. Lol. He & Bird played together during Pete’s last season.

Was it his silouette or Jerry West’s that formed the NBA logo?

Two of the best ball handlers the game has ever seen. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some ego clashes.

Rick Mount.

Didn’t Pistol Pete average something like 44 a game one year at LSU? Or are my facts wrong? I do know he was considered one of the greatest college players ever.

What is this?

Yup, you are right on the money. 44 PPG over his career and he holds the all-time points scored record in NCAA history. The most amazing thing about this record is that (a) there was no three point line (although he hit a lot of outside shots) and (b) that record is from three seasons, not four (since freshman were ineligible to play back then).

And just think if he had the arc in the NBA! In 81’ they brought in the 3pt line and in pre-season Pete went 10 for 15!! But his body was giving out on him & he decided to retire.

Ok, who noticed that Pete had his nickname “Pistol” on the back of his jersey?? I think Maravich is the only one in the NBA to have that done. Anyone else see another bball pro with that???

i think what is crazy is that somebody like jj redick who had such a great career and is in the argument as one of the best college shooters ever was still about 1,000 points behind maravich. ridiculous.

the record will stand forever because if anybody is good enough to do it they are goin to the league.

Except that Bird and Magic knew how to win. No one can doubt Pete’s basketball skills, but great individual stats aren’t what team sports are all about.

He was kind of like Stephon Marburry, great stats, but they didn’t do very much for the team.

Pete did everything. I have all his highlights form his LSU yrs. and he did it all! In fact, most of his HL clips are of him passing.

Back then LSU was a football school & that was it. The LSU Kentucky games back then were very close I might add. LSU, tks to Coach Maravich & Pete gave them hell.

Pete scored all those pts. because his dad cut him loose, no other coach would have done that. Well, I’m sure a few would have.

And, Bird played for real rinky dink program, but looked what they did. Shows how damn good both of those two were with not much talent around. That is great team work for both.

When you have a good horse, you run him.

He had something else that many of today’s top stars are missing: CLASS!

Check out the move “The Pistol: Birth of a Legend”

It’s an older one ('91), but I used to watch it all the time growing up. I think I’ve seen it more times than Hoosiers, the (2nd) best basketball movie of all time :). Actually, they’re tied in my mind. I love’em both.

Yah, I have it on VHS. Great movie. Hoosiers was great too.

A few more that are cool, are Hoop Dreams, Growing up this one was like whoa! Another one, I can’t remember the name, it’s from the late 70’s and the kid is using Nautilus to get stronger. It’s a good one. It features a young, shit, foget her name too. She’s got s puffy ass lips now, she’s married to Banderas.
