Best Training Scenes In Movies

So we had threads about the best fighting scenes, but what about the cool training scenes that usually take place beforehand?

The easy pick is obviously “Rocky”.
Rocky 1

Rocky 2

Rocky4

But my favorite is probably from Tsui Hark’s ‘the Blade’ when the crippled hero learns how to effectively utilize his broken Sword.

What about your favorite training sequence?

The Rocky 4 vid is missing rocky’s run up the mountain.

Before I even opened this thread Rocky IV came to mind. Another one of my favorites was Kickboxer (Van Damme) for some reason. I haven’t seen that movie in years, but the training montage has stuck with me somehow.

Pumping Iron?

As a kid I always loved the No Retreat No Surrender training scene. Van Damme makes his first or one of his first appearances. He’s the bad guy in that one.

Training Scene 1 when Bruce Lee’s ghost trains him
Training Scene 2 when he’s ‘the man’

This might not be a typically training scene, but I just came across the start of Red Heat with Arnold, and it starts out pretty cool :

(but ends kinda gay)

how about Lattimer working out in the university weightroom at the beginning of “The Program”?

I can’t believe it.
Saw the flic when I was young and I thought I mixed my memories up.

Let me see:
A sauna…with girls taking a plunge…meanwhile the boys are all busy pumping iron…right in front of the chics…who are all hot, if course…just like the dudes are all jacked…

Sweet Satan, the 80s were so beautifully naive!

By the way, it’s not a training sequence, not in the slightest, even when it’s cool. You’re out.

Fuckin eh… when he does 3 plates a side shoulder presses like 15 times!!! I’m sure they’re fake plates but it still looks freakin cool. That guy looked like a beast in that movie. Gotta love his intensity putting his head through car windows too.

come on!!! nobody’s mentioned TEAM AMERICA , a montage of a puppet pumpin iron both motivates you to lift and fight terrorism

I think it was 2 plates a side, and it was most likely legit repping of that weight. Guy is fuckin yoked up. Great scene.

How about the movie ‘Best of the Best’???

Hooray for almost naked men frolicking in the snow.

Monster

I found another Rocky 4 clip (no overlap with the original posters link).

And here’s the Kickboxer montage.

And a funny one I found on google.

Best of the Best is a good call, I love that movie.

Thanks for the heads up, I hadn’t seen that in forever. What would we do without YouTube?

oh shit that movie was sick! as if anyone remembers that! wasn’t that the movie with loren avedon and the white haired evil dude? and the final dramatic fight scene in the sirplane hangar?

at the beginning of the movie, ‘the big hit’, there’s the training scene where’s melvin is doing the pommel horse and hitting the wooden man, revealing what a bad-ass ninja melvin really is.

too bad it wasn’t really mark wahlberg.

Great stuff!

the training scene where VanDamme toughens his lowkick is just the thing we’ve been looking for!

BTW, I find it pretty cool that in his new flics he not the “split kick” guy anymore. It’s nice to see him evolve on the screen.

How about Stan Martsch, in the South Park episode where he trains to ski in Aspen?

Gotta have a montage!

Couldn’t find a link to it but the movie, ‘Youngblood’ has a pretty sweet training montage.

Oh, and it happens to be one of the best hockey movies ever made.

Keanu Reeves as the French-Canadian goalie. Brilliant.

So, in a nutshell, Rob Lowe is a “can’t miss” prospect invited to a major-junior camp “…up there, in Canada” who has to fight for the first time and gets his ass handed to him by the resident goon. He loses the fight, loses his girl, quits the team, and goes home…

For the training montage!

After an inspirational speech from his older brother (basically reaming him out for quitting), Rob trains hard. Weights, music, drills, heavy bag, and even a little jersey-pullin’ wrasslin’ match with the old man. Yep, his Dad teaches him how to fight on skates, and then he’s ready for the comeback to lead the team in the play-offs, nail his girlfriend again, and beat the shit out of said goon in the movie’s climax.

Sweet movie. I was a kid when I first saw it. And it has Patrick Swayze in it, how can you go wrong?

He’s no Eric Roberts, “Pop it Tommy! Pop it!” in Best of the Best, but not all of us are that gifted dramatically.

Great thread by the way! These movies are fun to think about.
