I’m currently on a 5/3/1 program and two weeks agao, after squats and a deadlift 5x10 set,the right side of my lower back started to hurt.
I’ve had lower back strains before, but they heal up in less than a week. This time it has not gotten any better. I have tried lifting through it as well and feel no pain during lifting. The pain is not debilitating either, but it has persisted for two weeks now.
It hurts when I bend my torso towards the right side, when I try to raise my right knee while standing, and when bending down to put on shoes for example.
I’m worried that this is a minor case of herniated disc. Unfortunately, I’m a broke-ass grad student whose insurance does not cover MRI’s. What should I do? Take off a long period of time without training? Or shell out the money for an MRI?
Foam roller, tennis ball, golf ball etc. into your lower back and glutes. Just roll around and see if you can find any tender spots and hang out there until the pain in that spot subsides. Do it a few times a day for a week and see if there’s any improvement.
Make sure you don’t roll on your spine incase do you have a herniated disc.

an MRI for what!?!?!?! your not going to get surgery judging by your symptoms. Save yourself the money (800-1000 if your paying cash), your symptoms sound like a herniation, if flexion activities are bothering you, try some extension based exercises and see if they help reduce your symptoms.
I don’t know who to address this to. Does anyone think the mods would sticky a thread that listed the clinical indications of various imaging? It seems people are confused as to when Xray, MRI, CT, etc are indicated and when they are being done “just in case.”
