Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

04.05.

Wanted to do keg clean & press, light car deadlifts and stone simulator today …

1 keg clean and press
2 x 3 @ 77 kg
1 x 2 @ 77 kg

Shut down my training here. I have no power, feel exhausted and back is over taxed. No chance but to take a deload and use the weekend for recovery.
It fits the schedule really bad but I think there is more to lose by being stubborn here than there is to gain.

Drove to the gym to use the Sauna.

I can’t help but feel a little frustrated. I reduced my training by one day and with the exeption of last weekend, nothing was particularely heavy except for deadlifts. Why the fuck am I breaking down so hard?! I suppose it doesn’t matter much… Still I feel like I am not putting that much work into this prep at all and I am still breaking down

I know the feeling man, and I feel with you.
I know I would (I actually am right now) try to push through and even though I know it won’t help me, I can’t help myself.
I would however advise you to deload for a week. You could still train but with a bit lower weight, focus on technique.
Either way I hope you’ll be ready for the meet.

Be careful my friend!

I am definitely starting to feel a lot better. I have taken a walk pretty much everyday the last days and my lower back and hips are finally recovered plus I feel normal again. I haven’t trained for 6 days tomorrow so I think I should be good

1 deadlift
Up to
1 @ 180 kg
2 @ 200 kg - PR
1 @ 200 kg - second came off the ground but I didn’t fight for it

2 banded deadlifts
2 x 3 @ 100 kg + band tension
5 @ 100 kg + band tension

3a smith machine hip thrusts
3 x 10 @ 171 kg

3b chest supported
3 x 10 @ 30 kg

Notes:

  • Haven’t lifted for 6 days. Feeling a lot better
  • changed the approach as stated before. I swapped out the elevated deadlifts for banded pulls. I’ve gotten a lot out of the elevated pulls but I am cutting back on them to not go any further into a recovery deficit. I opted for banded pulls because they involve much less weight and also they teach me to do a better lockout and accelerate through the whole movement.
  • my mate told me he would prefer me staying at 200 and go for 3 or even 4 reps in the remaining prep sessions, rather than going up in weight.

Wayne (my Aussie training partner from a while back) and Jordan are back in town for 4 days. Happy to see those cunts again. Had a humongous meal of sushi last night (40+ plates to be more precise) with them and a few other fellas we used to hang out with. I think that gave me some extra power today.

1 Push press
Last warm up was a beltless 100 kg. Effortless.
110 kg x 2 - ties PR
120 kg x 1 - PR!!! This one meant a lot guys…
110 kg x 2
110 kg x 3 - PR! More in the tank.

2a close grip paused board press (Hicks Press)
4 x 3 @ 105 kg
8 @ 105 kg - PR. Left some in the tank

2b lat pull down
5 x 8

3a tricep extensions
3 x 10

3b face pulls
3 x 15

Notes:

  • this is efficient training: Train for so long that the target weight will be something you are sure to get without any special circumstances. On just another day… after heavy deadlifts.
  • this was a goal of mine for a long time. A milestone that means a lot. But as always: Just another step.
  • met with Wayne and his gf after at the Fruehlungswiesen (like a small version of Oktoberfest) for a few beers.

Aight mate, packing up me shit and going over to kangaroo land. See you cunts soon.

Would fucking love to go there in all honesty. I know a lot of people who did “work and travel” down under after school (which is a big stereotype here nowadays). My parents didn’t have that kind of money though, haha. My sister has been there on holiday and liked it a lot. Maybe one day I’ll have enough money to come see some kangaroo people.

That was the entire plan. I was patient and waited with my attempt until I had no doubt

1 log lift (wanted to familiarize myself again with the technique as I haven’t done the log in some time)
up to
2 @ 76 kg
1 @ 86 kg
1 @ 91 kg
1 @ 96 kg
1 @ 101 kg - PR

2 keg clean and press
made the keg heavier with some water today. Don’t know if that was the best thing as technique training is now not an option anymore

  • only managed 2 x 1 @ ca. 86 kg and a bazillion failed cleans. Fuck the keg sucked today!

3 car deadlift simulator
went up in doubles and singles to
1 @ 235 kg
1 @ 265 kg
1 @ 285 kg - this was quite the grinder. Still need to find my foot position. Didn’t intend to go so heavy but it was after a long training day (training strongman alone in the yard sucks because most of the training day is spent putting stuff from a to b and back) and without any hype up.

Notes:

  • after all not a bad training. Very happy with how log felt
  • keg was a mess! Need to improve my clean technique fast… If anyone has any insight whatsoever, shoot away.

Video (damn my choice of cloth makes me look extra fat  ) :

  • I registered for another comp only two weeks after the next one. It makes prepping quite a challenge because the events differ completely. It is a shame because this one’s events suit me a lot better but I won’t really be prepared… not sure how to go about training at all. Events at the 15th of June will be:
  1. yoke walk @ 300 kg
  2. log lift @ 100 kg for reps from the floor
  3. farmer’s walk 115 kg for 40m
  4. best 20: Tyre flip (details unknown)

1 incline treadmill walking
15 minutes

2 stationary bike
15 minutes

3 Sauna

Notes:

  • gpp/ cardio day and some regeneration.
  • I am actually starting to enjoy the cardio training a bit more
  • I am super exhausted. I was out every single night and both weekend nights were very very long. A lot of beer and poor food choices all week. It was definitely fun though and I enjoyed myself.

Loving the progress in this log. Gone from being unwell and missing a strongman comp a few weeks ago to PRs every session. Great work mate

Thanks a lot mate, I appreciate you following along! Good point and I really enjoy the progression right now, even if I end up doing poorly in the next comp, I will have made some very substantial gains
