15.06.25 - German Cup in Stendal (2nd league competition)

Conditions weren’t easy wirh about 3 hours if sleep, blazing sun and 30°C. I had a partner of mine accompany me and she did a fantastic job as my supporter (it was her 2nd experience on the strongman circus)

1st event: Keg clean & press
80 kg for max reps in 1 min

I got 12 reps.

Very good result, absolutely smooth run. Held the pace for the entire minute and actually conditioning was super solid. Didn’t feel like dying throughout or afterwards.

2nd event: Rising bar car deadlift
Starting weight 260 kg, +20 kg after each rep

260 kg :white_check_mark:
280 kg :white_check_mark:
300 kg :cross_mark:

This ties what I’ve done prevously in this event. I think it showed that I didn’t have any practice because I didn’t take advantage of the implement at all.

3rd event: Yoke walk
300 kg for 20 m

I finished in 11,4 seconds.

The yoke was a fantastic piece of kit. Felt great. Don’t know yet where my result landed me but it was a decent run.

4th event: Loading Medley
150 kg swinging duckwalk (10m) into 120 kg sandbag (10m) into 130 kg atlas stone

Had a very good run on the awkward duck walk and the bad but failed the stone.

How fucking close can one come?! At least I gave it my everything. Had a short shutdown of the operating system because the stone pressed against my diaphragm for a bit too long.

I finished 15th out of 18 wihich is worse than last time but I had a better performance throughout and that’s worth more to me. I am actually quite content with my performance. It was not a bad showing.

Now off to vacation in Budapest and then the next competition is already lined up for the 13th of July.

Love the fact you had pom pom waving cheerleaders that’s a first for me to see at a strongman comp.

Amazing effort, such a battle with that stone, brilliant, loved the system reset as well.

Vacation workout in Budapest. The gym was a bit of fever dream brcause it consisted of endless corridors and small rooms built into catacombs. It is a bit of a labyrinth.

Incredibly hot. I was dripping within 20 minutes.

1 power clean and power jerk
3 @ 100 kg - clean each
3 @ 102,5 kg - clean once from here on out
3 @ 105 kg
3 @ 107,5 kg
5 @ 110 kg

2 lat pull down (nautilus)
3 x 12

3 one arm db row
3 x 10 @ 40 kg each arm

4 db clean and press
4 @ 40 kg (2 each arm)
4 @ 50 kg (2 each arm)
5 @ 60 kg (only right) - but too shaky/ no secure lockout
4 @ 60 kg (only right) - closer stance before the jump. Much better.

I think with some practice and the proper equipment, this will improve a lot! I mean these conditions were tough at this gym with incredible heat and whatnot and it was the end of the workout.

6 biceps machine
4 x 10-15

Don’t judge my form. These were strongman cleans. Not weightlifting cleans. :joy: No chalk, lifters and no practice will do that. I am sure the last clean was some kind of biomechanics PR.

I learned a lot from this video. As you can see I am not using the same technique as Kalle does but what I took away from this is that the elbow of the hand that grips the bottom part must be rotated so it points forward. That is really important to get into a good pressing position or even to iniate a good one motion.
The way I do it, I slighty rotate the keg on the start, so that said hand is more in front (watch my latest training videos for that).

What I also find important is to really generate power from the legs and hips to drive the keg. It’s more of a snatch/ viper press kind of movement for me.

Also: You can’t be afraid to lean back! This is something I tolerate very well, maybe because of years of using that shit log, but it’s also what allows me to have that fluent movement from the hips up overhead. There’s a lot of hyperextension in the back involved.
I would recommend using a belt for this event, especially if you’re using a lot of lean back. Feels much more comfortable.

This is awesome help mate,

I watched this video and it also shows the hand in front rotation like you also talk about. I think it’s just going to be a lot of practice now to get the movement to feel more natural

Got home from Budapest. A wonderful vacation came to an end. It was much needed and way too short.
Drove back from Berlin and tried to train in the evening. The travel affected me moe than I thought though, so I cut it a bit short. I just had no power in me. I couldn’t even one motion the keg, lol.

That is all okay. Next week will be back to normal and full steam forward.

1 monster dumbbell
1 @ 40 kg
1 @ 50 kg
1 @ 55 kg
1 @ 60 kg
1 @ 65 kg
4 x 0 @ 70 kg
5 x 1 @ 65 kg

The 65’s got better and better with each rep. I am confident this will improve quickly!

2 overhead medley
4 rounds of just a single each
80 kg barbell - 90 kg keg - 100 kg axle - 90 kg keg

some times I wish my workouts would go on vacation. I love the idea of free beer after a session, but given I rarely drink these days this offer would be more, wasted on me, rather than me wasted.

Sadly the machine was broken when it was time for the post workout nutrition. I never had much but I did drink beer every day on this vacation. It is kind of a liberating expression of being on vacation for me. Also goes great with Hungarian food, haha.

First three runs singles on each
1st run - 34 seconds
2nd run - 34 seconds
3rd run - 34 seconds, lol.

4th run went for reps on the keg
Got 2 reps within a minute.

This gam be improved on. I think 3 reps in comp would be a good target. 4 would be absolutely great.

0 @ 70 kg
Found the mistake!

Let me guess, you figured out you needed to push harder.

Often times that is the answer.

As highlighted by this expert coaching cue from Paul

In this instance though it was the elbow position when the dumbbell is racked.

1 doh continental clean & press (barbell)
5 x 3 @ 100 kg

2 18" deadlift
3 @ 200 kg
3 @ 220 kg
3 @ 240 kg
3 @ 260 kg - RPE 9
2 @ 260 kg - stumbled on rep 2. Prevented rep 3, sadly.

3 farmer’s walk
5 x 15 m @ 120,5 kg per hand

4 zercher marches
3 x 45 sec @ 120 kg

Harder than I thought

5 Concept 2 rower
5 x 20 sec sprints, 1 Min. rest.

Sadly found out afterwards that 18" isn’t the correct heigth for the silver dollar deadlift but whatever. Good training. The vacation definitely gave me some extra energy for this week.

This was a long one but work capacity feels really good atm.

1 axle clean & jerk
4 x 3 @ 105 kg

Did doh on the clean for the last two sets but I don’t see this giving a time advantage rn. Also all split jerks as per Paul’s instructions.

2 keg clean & press
3 x 4 @ 90 kg

the torn callus from yesterday’s workout was annoying here.

3 paused monster dumbbell clean & press
7 x 2 @ 60 kg

I wish I had more time with this because everytime I touch this thing, I learn more and improve.

4 keg carry
6 x 15 m @ 90 kg

5 sandbag carry
2 x max. distance @ smth. between 125-130 kg

So I got a spare bag from someone but it is a 150 kg size bag. Filled 125 kg of sand in it and this thing is so tall, it’s a behemoth. I struggle greatly to hold it in place. At least I really hope that is my issue with this one because the distances I got today were pathetic! The 120 kg bag last comp felt much easier though.

6 doh axle deadlifts
4 @ 100 kg
2 x 5 @ 100 kg

Long, hard training. Disappointed with the sandbag. Rest was good. Good lord I am sore today.
