Sounds like you might have some more juice to squeeze by finding ways to relax and getting more sleep.
22.05.
1 keg clean and press
3 x 3 @ 90 kg
Strength is good, technique getting there but need more practice.
2 deadlift (beltless, power bar)
3 x 6 @ 170 kg
Normal conventiinal from now on
3 atlas stone
3 @ 103 kg
1 @ 128kg
2 @ 103 kg
3 @ 103 kg
4 keg carry + shuttle runs
5 x 10 m @ 90 kg
- I got the stone on the like 4th or 5th try. I wanted to do it a second time but only accumulated more fails. I feared this would happen. Really doesn’t help the nerves before the comp… I can only take some comfort from last years experience, knowing that the stones there are much nicer to lift than the ones I crafted. If I get one rep to equal what I did last year, I am fine with it. I just don’t want to zero.
Yeah true mate. Although easier said than done. I really really need a vacation. I have been feeling and saying that for months now. After my second comp, I have one lined up and I am counting down the days.
This weekend I will also hit the spa.
23.05.
1 log lift (clean once)
2 x 6 @ 103,5 kg
2 yoke walk
4 x 15m @ 215 kg
It’s been a while and I have missed it.
3 farmer’s walk
20 m @ 133 kg - PR!
20 m @ 135,5 kg - PR!!!
4 high incline db press
3 x 8 @ 40 kg - PR
Easy. @cyrrex
- felt much better today than the previous two days. Fatigue is very high obviously but knee and biceps are good again. Right hip ‘hurts’ with every step but that’s just some mild gluteal tendinitis. So I don’t care.
- Fuck yeah! Buzzing witht the farmer’s walk progress! I could have used either a bit more weight or could have done a longer distance. That is fantastic and shows there is more to come. Feels great to make progress here despite my comically small hands and under such fatigue. It doesn’t even feel like we placed much focus on this.
26.05.
1 log lift (clean each rep)
2 x 3 @ 100 kg
2 front squats
Up to
1 @ 140 kg
2 x 3 @ 100 kg

4 x 2
Rest up and let’s go!
29.05.
German Cup Walldürn (2nd league competition)
I felt decently prepared and strong heading into this. I had a new partner accompanying me and it was her first experience on the strongman circus, which was pretty cool. We had about a 3 hour drive, started at 8.30 in the morning and were home 11.30 pm. So a very very long day.
1st event: Arm over arm pull
- 20 m with a VW transporter full of people, uphill.
Even though my grip was stronger than last year at this event, I finished below my expectations. I didn’t manage to pull the whole distance. That was a bit of a disheartening start. The pull just felt incredibly heavy on the last 1/3 of the way since the incline was increasing over the course.
Result: 14,5 m, 26th place finish
Actually worse than last year by 2 meters.
2nd event: Log lift for reps with 110 kg
- 60 second time limit, clean each rep.
I wanted 3 reps to be okay with it, 4 as a goal and 5 as a best outcome.
I had some stabilization issues on the press, mainly because the log is so different from the one I train on.
But I got 5 reps for a HUGE PR (previous was 3 x 110 kg/ 5 x 105 kg). So that made me very happy… for a while.
Result: 5-way tie for 11th place
3rd event: Stone over bar 130 kg
My PR is one rep and I wanted to at least replicate that or increase to two.
But I eneded up zeroing the event. The spray tacky on my forearm guards hadn’t dried in time so it was increasing slipperiness instead of preventing it. I quickly took them off and threw them away. After that I actually was able to lap the stone but with no tacky on my arms I wasn’t able to get a grip and an extension.
This was devastating. Not gonna lie. Probably more of a technicality than a strength issue but zeroing is a hard blow.
Result: 27th place
4th event: Carry Medley
- 20 m distance, 3 implements: 130 kg (p.h.) farmer’s walk, 90 kg keg, 100 kg sandbag (both were to be loaded onto a platform)
The farmer’s were a very high pick, so that portion was no problem but they are basically two giant quaders that dangle against your legs. So they felt unstable and I panicked a bit about grip and didn’t dare to pick up speed.
The keg was no problem… and then it got weird.
I started out well with the sandbag but at about 2/3 pf the way, my legs just wouldn’t obey me anymore. The lungs were fine but the legs were so full of lactate that I felt like I would fall over if I attempted another step. So I had to pause with the sandbag in my lap for a while, make some steps, pause again and load it up. I just thought to myself “Whatever you do - DON’T let go!!”.
So while that was a poor showing I am still proud of the grit and determination I displayed there.
Not training sandbags at all and no medley type training affected me more than I and also Paul thought apparently.
Result: 68.4 seconds, 22th place finish
I ended up placing 23rd out of 27 competitors. One issue I had over the day was that I struggled to get my head in the game a bit and tap into adrenaline. Overall it was a mixed bag and I can’t be too happy with my performance but I take away the log as a huge win and to the rest I’ll say: That’s competition for ya. Sometimes things don’t go as planned and you have to keep moving forward and try again. So while I am not too happy, I am not too negative about my performance either.
Congrats on the PR! That’s awesome.
And on a great competition—maybe not the outcome you hoped for, but you’re putting yourself out there, and that’s great to see.
Keep up the good work, brother!
Thank you, mate!
