I am here crossing my fingers…I can see from your last few posts that you are clearly about to compete. Make sure to show them all your back bridge mate, strongmen types love that shit.

I thought you loved front squats. You get the joy of beating my numbers

Front squats are my Mondays. I’m even worse at them as I am at deadlifts, relatively speaking.

God damn this was a crazy long day but here we go - comp write up time!

03.06. - German Cup in Stendal (2n national league competition)

Started at 8 am with a 3 hour drive. Not too bad distance wise.

1st event - keg clean and press
90 kg for reps in 60 seconds - got 6

Lost my balance on the fourth rep which should have been a one motion lift. After that it turned into a crazy fight. On the last rep I had to attempt the press twice - no oxygen left, the keg was already sliding down my chest, I lost orientation and started to panick a bit: It was do or die and it went up!
6 reps is a PR, although I wanted 7 and I think with a bit more proffiency earlier in the set, that might have been in the cards.

2nd event: Deadlift
Oh why does it always have to be a deadlift…?
We could choose between 225 or 265 kg and I obviously chose the lighter option.

I got 3 reps and failed the 4th above my knees (why the hell didn’t I just hitch it?!)

I recently came off a back injury and didn’t have much opportunity to train deadlifts heavy (only had one session with 220 kg), so the overall result isn’t even that terrible. BUT I am kind of mad because in a comp setting with the nerves and everything, I just throw out every kind of game plan or technique I wanted to use and do whatever and the same thing happened here.

3rd event: Weight for heigth
18, 20, 20, 24 kg over 4 meters

I only got the 18 kg.

Also that in itself is a big improvement, it is still very disappointing because this looked a lot more promising in training! The bags were different, which made a bit of a difference but also maybe the fatigue just set in too much at this point.

4th event: Loading medley
90 kg keg, 120 kg sandbag, 140 kg atlas stone

I got the first two and failed the stone.

This went just as expected. I didn’t think they would use a 140 kg stone but I would have likely failed a 130 kg as well.

5th event: Tire flip
5 flips for time with 350 kg

This went pretty well despite not touching a tire in a year. I wasn’t very fast but did solid reps at the end of a very exhausting competition in the bright sun.

Overall I got 20th place, which was second to last. We saw some brilliant performances from the other guys today.

I’m not overly proud of my performance but at the same time, I’m not mad. I’m glad I competed today and in the league again and I was happy to see some familiar friendly faces again. I had a good time and it was the right decision to at least do this one comp this year. The events definitely did not play to my strengths, but that’s strongman. Can’t pick what you want and that’s fine.

Kudos to you for competing, my man! Sounds like you had a good time, too.

And there’s this!

Not at all surprise about this given the amount of overhead work you do.

Nice job on the PR and well done to you for getting out there and competing. For me it doesn’t matter where you placed what matter is that you stepped on the field of battle shoulder to shoulder with your comrades in arms and you gave it everything. Salute and respect

Thanky guys @SvenG @simo74 I appreciate your support!

I think outside of being sick or depressed, I’ve probably never been so physically beat as I have been after this comp. I’m back on my bull shit with sleep issues for a while, which adds to the problem. I basically felt completely hungover for two days and of course my whole body hurts (no injuries though). On Sunday I tried to go for my usual short walk (3.5 km) and I kid you not, I had to sit down after about half the distance because I was feeling so dizzy and out of it. Now I’m better and I wanted to start back into training but even though I started out light and with low volume today, this might have still been a bit overkill, haha.

1 seated barbell jump
3 x 3 @ 40 kg

2 btn jerk
3 x 3 @ 120 kg

3 jerk recovery
2 x 1@ 140 kg
1 @ 120 kg

Wanted to try this for my next phase of training but it didn’t really work out the way I thought it would. Not sure if I’ll keep it.

4 ssb squat
3 x 8 @ 102 kg

5 atlas stone to shoulder
2 x 3 @ 75 kg

Still look heavy to me. Would it be worth you considering a very light block for 4 weeks. Lots of light prowler pushing and some bodybuilding work maybe ? It sounds to me like your body is telling you, you need a break.

Yeah I plan on cruising a bit through training with the one focus being the jerks for which I want to find a good end to this training cycle because I was on such a good track before comp.
It’s actually the squats which felt very light but had my legs screaming, that showed me my muscles weren’t happy with my decision making, haha.

Light pumping because I’m feeling the itch to move despite my muscles feeling otherwise. Well also maybe I just don’t have other hobbies.

6 @ 15 kg

1b pulls ups
2 x 3

2a push ups
3 x 15

2b cable row
3 x 15

3a biceps curls
3 x max

3b triceps push downs

Tomorrow some light deadlifts if I feel like it and then gradually back to it next week.

Holy fuck the Doms are kicking like a herd of mules. But not only the expected upper body doms. My legs are actually cary sore from the 100 kg squats. Apparently my body quickly gets detrained from specific stimuli if I don’t utilize them (like doing more than 5 reps, even with low weight far from failure).

1 hang power clean
2 @ 80 kg
2 @ 90 kg
2 @ 95 kg
5 x 2 @ 100 kg - PR

I have never done a non continental clean with 100 kg before :joy:. And I did try.
I just thought “do the same as you did with the high pulls, but rotate your arms” - and it was easy! Despite the DOMS. I’m fully aware the technique is artrocious ( I didn’t use my legs at all to catch and my elbows were way down) but holy shit the high pulls and all the explosive training is paying off!

2 sldl block pulls (3 mats)
3 x 10 @ 100 kg

3 face pulls
3 x 20

I find myself dabbling with the idea of quitting Strongman very frequently. I have so for some time. The arguments always stay the same and go in circles. Some very objective and understandable, some from a weird point of self-dislike.

On the other hand I realized something the other day: If I keep at it for another 3 years, I will have competed in strongman for 10 consecutive years (first comp 2016). That has a cool ring to it.

Although in all honesty I never amounted to much, speaking from a competitive standpoint and I didn’t do that many competitions in that time frame (corona, job, life, depression, lack of commitment, lack of money, whatever etc.), it’s still something that sounds great ro say about myself in retrospect.

13 years of competitive football, maybe about 6-8 seasons in tennis, similar in table tennis and to be 10 years in strongman. I don’t see myself doing this forever, not even a bit, but that realization did initiate a bit more drive.
I am very aware of my limitations - self set or not and that’s a good thing. But I do need to ask myself how I plan on spending those remaining years of competitive lifting and how I plan to go out.

1 seated barbell jump
3 x 3 @ 40 kg

2 btn split jerk
7 x 2 @ 130 kg
1 @ 140 kg

Jerks felt annoyingly difficult and not explosive enough. So I added set after set and even the single to teach my body what is what!

2 jerk drives (pin squats a few inches from lockout)
5 @ 220 kg
2 x 5 @ 250 kg

3 ssb squats
3 x 8 @ 122 kg

4 triceps extensions
3 x 9-12
