Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

True. Although my alcohol tolerance has always been quite ridiculous. So a ‘low dose’ for me is quite a lot for other people.

I don’t like getting black out drunk and doing that by yourself is definitely an issue, no question.

I think that when shit really hits the fan, you can excuse almost anything non-permanent to cope with it. I know that in an ideal world, we’d probably all deal with everything that gets thrown at us immediately and with stoic resolve, but i’m not sure how realistic that is. Even the old school stoics (real stoics), allowed for periods of grief as a natural human response.

1 deficit deadlift (1 inch)
5 x 3 @ 180 kg (stiff bar)

done in 8.35 min. Reps were fucking slow! Fuck this Corona shit! From almost comp shape to struggling with these light ass weights. Okay I’m calm again.

2 suitcase carry
6 x 15m (p.h.) EMOM @ 65 kg

3 high bar squats (beltless, again narrowish stance, super deep)
5 x 3 @ 110 kg

Done in 7.08 minutes. Much better than Monday.

4 leg extensions (done on reverse hyper)
3 x 20 @ 40, 50, 60 kg

Notes:

  • I still had DOMS from Monday in my quads. Kinda freaky. Corona hit the legs the hardest, haha.

I’m sorry if I’m confusing you here but if I recall correctly, you have used weighted vest walking as GPP work, right? @T3hPwnisher @mr.v3lv3t
I frequently go on walks anyway and after watching a recent Alan Thrall video, it dawned on me that I could up that by loading it to help me improve my general fitness and get better at hiking and stuff. I want to be good at moving and doing things outside of strongman at my body weight.

What are your experiences? Do you have any tips for me? Did you notice a negative impact on your lifting from lack of recovery?

Hey man, I’m not either one of the guys you tagged specifically, but I’ve been doing weighted vest walks 3x per week for well over a year now. For me, they’re a great excuse to get out and get moving, so I agree: if you’re already walking, why not load up a little?

The walks have never hurt my recovery; if anything, they’ve improved it because the addition of the load makes my body work just a little bit harder—particularly on the hills, of which we have a lot in my neighborhood—but not so hard as to be counter-productive.

I started with a load of 10 kg, which is roughly 10% bodyweight for me, and I’ve worked up to 30 kg, which is the maximum my vest can hold and just about 1/3 bodyweight. The “progression” was haphazard and mostly just to make me work a little bit harder than I was with whatever load I had been using previously. Even so, I’ll repeat that these walks have never hurt my recovery.

Bottom line: I’d highly recommend incorporating them into the walks you’re already doing, at least occasionally. In my experience, weighted vest walks are an easy way to be awesome!

Not tagged but I’m a huge fan of weighted walks for cardio and lower body recovery.

With that said, find a vest that fits well or necks and traps won’t be happy, which can impact upper body recovery or even sleep

Appreciate the tag man, but I don’t have much to add beyond what @SvenG wrote. He’s also been much more consistent than I with using it.

I spend a lot of time with a backpack on so I just jumped right into the 60lb walks, but I’ve dialed it down for longer ones too.

Big fan of weighted vest walks/activity, primarily because it’s like a GPP/conditioning cheat code. Going for a walk? Why not throw the vest on? Same with lawn care, household chores, etc.

It tends to be pretty positive for recovery. Gets the blood flowing. Good time to listen to podcasts.

Thank you all for the input! Great pointers all around.

Just completed a ca. 4 km walk with 10 kg. Gotta say it’s incredibly awkward to do this in a city, haha. I don’t know how you all cope with that?!

I may need to buy me one for better sizing and heavier loading option but I don’t want to (can) spend a lot of money so for now, I’ll stick with that option.

Weighted vest walk.

Little bit further (by acccident) than yesterday.
Much faster pace. Which gives me the idea to time these. My feet are feeling it a bit.

Otherwise not feeling too fit this weekend. I suspect that’s largely due to the emotional state. The vest walk made me feel more alive if anything. But having a hard time with the weird looks. Usually I’m not the type of guy to be bothered by stuff like that but this is weird on another level.

I’ll admit: This statement made me laugh. But only because I know from experience exactly what you mean… Like you, I couldn’t care less what people think, but it is weird—on another level.

Good on you for doing it anyway!

Does it get better at all, haha? At least you are in Murica (no?) and people might be used to seeing bulletproof vests. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m seriously considering making a little sign and patching that on my vest (as soon as I have my own) that says “don’t worry, this vest is not for protection. I’m working on my fitness!”

The regular walkers in my neighborhood and at the park are no longer concerned, but if I venture out too far, I still get weird looks!

In fact, there was a time when I was wearing it 8 hours a day based on this study, and I had to explain myself to the policeman I passed at the grocery store. Now that was an interesting conversation!

You just need to get down with the most Bad Ass element of cowboy American style.

The Duster!

Wear one of these over the vest and no one will notice.

@SvenG can’t wait for the conversation with a cop about why I’m so weird, haha

@FlatsFarmer genius solution for the winter! In the summer though… maybe I should go all out with the Florida ways and just buy a matching rifle? Then I’d maybe be less weird… but more concerning.

1 log strict press
5 x 5 @ 76 kg

Got in 5 minutes but failed the 5th on the last set. I’m furious!

2 high bar squat (beltless)
5 x 5 @ 100 kg

in 6.05 minutes. Better by light years compared to last week

3 lat pull down
3 x 8 @ stack 13

4 reverse flys (chest supported)
3 x 8 @ 17,5 kg

It seems like work capacity isn’t the main problem post corona. Strength is!

Also I’m basically a pendulum swinging back and forth between sadness and aggression atm. Besides the bigger picture of emotional baggage right now, a lot of stuff and people are getting on my nerves (which is easy to do these days tbh.). I’m sure I’ll level out in a bit of time.

I got a bit of this when I was doing a lot of this. It helped when I was fostering the dog for Australian Border Force and the dog had its training vest on because people then assumed my vest was some sort of security flat jacket… LOL One option for you is to find a dog to walk or just buy a police cap.

I had lots of odd looks and people I knew telling me they thought it was a bomb vest etc. But like @SvenG said who gives a fk what people think.

Just lean into it, mate. Get yourself some shitty sunglasses, an official looking hat, one of those radio things you clip to the shoulder, pepper spray and taser on the belt, etc. Occasionally talk into the radio and say things like “perp seen moving west on main, get the back-up team in place it is going DOWN”.

5 x 20 done in 1.05 minutes. Lol.
