Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Just a thought mate. Are you and this girl in the same larger friendship group ? Is there someone else in that group who you both trust that you could ask to speak to her and gauge how she is feeling. Sometimes an intermediary can be helpful.

1 oh squats
3 x 6 @ 60 kg

2 axle wsm squats
4 x 3 @ 178,5 kg

Heavy today. Some misgrooved ones. But confident I could have done more reps if needed.

3 axle clean and press
4 x 3 @ 103,5 kg

The legs were pretty tired.

4 sandbad carry
4 x 30m @ 125 kg

Third set was the best by a mile.

5 hollow rocks
3 x 25

Notes:

  • little sleep, lots of stress and bad mood. Among other things I had an exam that went poorly

1 deadlift
3 x 4 @ 200 kg

2 viking press
3 x 8 119,5 kg

3 seated box jumps
5 x 3

4 sandbag carry
2 x 70m @ 100 kg

5 incline db row
3 x 10 @ 27,5 kg

Notes:

  • viking press felt kinda challenging for the first time ever. Not hard per se, mid back was just decently fatigued.
  • 70 meter sandbag carries are cruel. I completed both and on the second I went to put the bag away for an additional 5 meters or so but I was running out of the last bits of oxygen left in my lungs and kinda went down. Nothing happened though, it just looked funny.

That’s what peaks are for.

A good outcome that is expected does not make said outcome any less good.

Oh for sure. The tiredness isn’t entirely to blame on the peak either. But in general that’s how a peak goes: You start to feel like crap while the big numbers come in.
I feel like this prep is VERY well timed to the t. Like I am fatigued and sore but nothing really hurts and I feel ready to perform at peak performance (whatever that’s gonna mean on the day).

I went to a strongman competitions as a coach and handler for some of my gym friends yesterday. It was a looong day, starting at 7 am with the drive and returning at 2 am. I have practically no voice left and an aching throat from shouting like a lunatic. The organizers were down a crew member so I also jumped in to help them out and therefore made a million farmer’s walk trips (every time someone didn’t complete the distance, I carried the handles back).
My guys and gals were very happy with me being there, fixing up Alex’ shoulder beforehand, giving tips and insights, back slaps and encouraging screams, haha.
I couldn’t be more proud. It was more of a beginner competition (hence why I didn’t compete myself).
I talked Louisa into competing on Tuesday(!) without any kind of strongman experience (ex boxer and did crossfit) and she won the women’s overall class! That takes some balls and I am very proud.
Nils (our gym owner) won the u100 kg class and took 2nd overall. Brilliant performance.
Alex got 3rd overall.

So three podium finishes for our gym. Very exhausting but also great day!

Now I’m pretty done and it’s pouring buckets all day, so I’ll skip the scheduled carry events day and see how I’m feeling about it tomorrow. I feel like I might be getting sick, since my flatmate is already pretty down with the cold. Would be my usual luck with the comp in 6 days but whatever.

I was right this time. I still have a fee days, so lets hope this is going to be a quick one.

Liked to post about the competition earlier but did it have time to reply. Just wanted to say that this sounded like an awesome day and it sounds like you have a get eat group of training friends. You are very lucky to be surrounded by like minded and focused people.

Oh yeah the people at my gym are great and I absolutely love it there. I’ve never had a community like that for training. We definitely have lots of fun in and outside the gym.

I have pretty high hopes to be fit for the weekend. I ended up missing the last few final sessions but the important work was done anyway. This sickness has been a weird one. I have very little to barely any congestion or nose blockage but had some random joint, head and limb pain for three days and feel … well like someone who has the flu (just tired and beat down). I also sweat profoundly as soon as I move.
BUT I’m off work for the whole week, had a negative pcr test and my body is responding very well. I’ve intentionally rested as much as possible, slept INCREDIBLY long and am taking everything that vaguely suggests it might help beat the flu, haha. Paired of course with frequent hot baths and more fresh ginger tea than I ever wanted to have.
As a result I’m feeling better quickly!

I’m sure people will gossip to no end if I don’t return to work this week and then go to a strongman contest on the weekend (it’s as German of a behavior as it gets) but my body obviously needed the break and maybe I can get this over with without dragging it out for once.

Since I have so much time today:
I already thought about my goals for after comp season and talked them over with Paul.
It’s very common for me to think about these things a little ahead of time.

So my main goals are kind of conflicting:

  1. Pull 250 kg before the year is over.
  2. Body recomp, similar to what I did last year.

The second one isn’t getting me anywhere in terms of competitiveness but it is an ego driven goal that will help me feel better about myself.

What we’re going to do in order to attack both goals is to do a rather short deadlift peak after my second comp and then move into some more hypertrophie oriented stuff and the accompanying diet. After that we’ll work on max static strength again. So all in all pretty close to what we did last off-season apart from the deadlift peak. I’m excited to attack those goals.

About an hour of walking, then some moves with the empty barbell (mainly jefferson curls and ohp) because I feel stiff from all the inactivity. Tonight a large pizza and a hot bath.

I can tell I haven’t competed in a minute. I definitely feel the nerves and the electricity!
