Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Sheesh dude, guess we know what you will be doing in the bath.

Nah mate, I’m not a fan of foam rolling. Also I’d have to mop up the whole bath cause the tub is tiny and I have to be careful not to flood the place anyways.

If you had just written this part, I might think you actually understood the joke. It sure wasn’t about foam rolling.

Now I’m not sure if you’re messing with me or think I’m 13. It’s getting too meta, old man.

From now on I will just explain all of my jokes, that way nobody can misunderstand them nor will I suspect they have misunderstood.

I don’t think there was anything to misunderstand. Well, or my heads too far inside the gutter.

But explaining jokes is always fun!

You know what…on second thought, Foam Rolling is actually a pretty good euphemism. You go roll that foam.

Definitely a pre game tradition for me.

I have to say for being sick I did a good job keeping up the food intake throughout the week. Weighed in at 122 kg yesterday. Which is 5 kg lighter than last year at this exact time and also right where I want to be.

Good luck with the comp mate can’t wait to read how you go. :muscle::muscle: Smash it

There seems to be a positive correlation between stress and the number of PRs in this log.
Getting sick = stress
Completely environment = stress
Looks like we’re in for some pretty serious action here :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Good luck!!!

Id did not get hurt.
Other than that, I should probably wait until tomorrow to do my write up because this has been a desaster and I’m currently fueled with negativity, which might paint a darker picture than necessary.

Sorry that it wasn’t your day. There will always be another comp.

True. I’ll wallow in self pity for a day or two, have an adequate amount of drinks tonight and then I’ll pick myself up again.

So sorry :disappointed:

Still stronger than me dude.

Now I really want to read it.

I am calmed down enough by now but now it’s too late and I’m too tired. Will do an in-depth write up tomorrow evening most likely.

So let’s dive into it. Yesterday I competed at my 10th GFSA strongman competition and my 5th second league comp.
Apart from being sick the week leading up and not being able to train for the frame carry, I felt very well prepared heading into this one.
Unfortunately I didn’t have any handlers who could make the trip with me.

First event: Car deadlift
This was originally written out to be for reps but they changed it last second to a rising bar max. This is how it worked: You lift it, get a down command, the helpers add 20 kg, you get a start command and lift again until you can’t get it up anymore.
The starting weight was 260 kg snd they drove the car up pretty close (changes the mechanics). I was honestly pretty scared I wouldn’t get the starting weight and to make matters worse, I had to go first in this.
Result: 260 kg :white_check_mark: 280 kg (grind):white_check_mark: 300 kg :negative_squared_cross_mark: (not a chance).
This was about as well as I would have expected to do. I shared last place with 2 other guys. A bunch of people tapped out after 300 and ultimately 380 kg won. Most people seemed to do about 30 kg more than their standard barbell deadlift.
Deadlifts remain my achilles tendon.

Second event: Axle clean and press for reps
We had to choose between 105 or 125 kg. My warm up consisted of: 0 - 1x 105 kg (very convincing rep) - go time.
So everything in my training pointed towards this being my strength. I had done 126 kg for multiple sets in the gym. I approached the bar with the same technique as in training. The clean was a bit harder because they had competition collars clinged on so tightly, they turned the thing basically into a fixed axle.
Still, the clean went pretty good. The press didn’t. I tried multiple times but I didn’t get it overhead. 15 kg below my max press. After doing 130 kg for three and 126 kg for easy two on the axle in training.
I was shocked honestly. I think my head was blocked or something. I have no words.
This honestly knocked me down so hard I wanted to quit right then and there and not ever step on a platform again. This was my strength! I had 3 reps in mind tbh.
I’m not a fan of excuses and will never got there. This is why we compete. Everyone can talk big and do lifts in his gym or basement where everything lines up perfectly. In competition you’re on the spot. You have to bring it right then and there… and ultimately I just didn’t.
One rep would have had me in 11th place, 2 reps in 7th, 3 in 2nd. This knocked me to the bottom (both on the list and my head).

Event three: The frame carry
250 kg for 40 meter with a drop and turn at 20m.
I didn’t have much opportunity to train for this and honestly, 250 kg is just a lot of weight for my little hands and weak grip. I had two drops but fought my way back and completed the whole course. I can’t really say I’m too disappointed because I knew this was going to be rough and at least I made it the whole way…
I finished in 43,44 seconds for 16th place.

Event four: Sandbag carry
120 kg for Maximum distance (turn every 20m), only one quick(!) readjustment allowed (no resting in the lap while squatting), no shouldering, belt buckles on the back.
I went 61.35 meters for a 10th place finish. 98 meters won for a German record. I can’t be too disappointed BUT there was way more on the table here!
My strategy was to take advantage of my quick feet because I thought my ability to hold on to the bag was going to be the limiting factor. I think that backfired on me because I stumbled a bit and lost the sack dropped down in front of my legs. I tried the readjustment I was allowed but couldn’t get it back onto my chest. I still went a little over ten meters with the bag dangling in front of my lap but anyone who has tried that knows you’re on a timer here. I crossed the 60m line and tried a last jump forward which ended in a near face plant but had me beat 2 guys who stopped at 60m.

Overall I think I discussed most things. One takeaway for me is, that I’m continuously underperforming on my (best) pressing events in comp and oftentimes over performing in things I didn’t think would go great. There is a lesson there and I’m going to figure it out. Maybe we’ll change the approach accordingly. Not sure.
I ended up in 17th of 18th place. The axle knocked me down all the way.
The show was very well run and although I’m disheartened, I shall be back… As always.

There are some additional points and observations that I will add at a later point in time.
