Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

22.02.

I am outside again! We had a temperature rise from one weekend to the other of nearly 40°C! It’s nuts!

1 oh squats
3 x 5 @ 75 kg

2 log lift (clean once)
3 x 4 @ 106 kg - PR!

Fucking dominated this weight!!
See rep 3, set1? Closest I have ever been to a 100 kg strict press, haha. Man my shoulders and arms have really gained some power.

3 vertical jumps
5 x 3

4 barbell row
3 x 8 @ 110 kg

5 hollow holds
4 x 35 kg

Notes:

  • I got the oh squats but they were really difficult today and I barely made it in set 3.
  • really good session.
  • I now have power naps in my training plan. I couldn’t make it work (as in wasn’t able to fall asleep) today but I tried.

Fuck I was pissed today. Loaded like a damn time bomb. I have excellent self control and I would never lash out to others … but you know the feeling of secretly hoping that someone in the streets would attack you, just so you can bash their teeth in? Not one I’m comfortable with.I would never act on this, if anything I let it out on myself.
It’s me who I am angry at and since I’m kinda big, I didn’t pick a fight.
So yeah, nap wasn’t happening and I was really looking forward to this workout to let off some steam.

1 power snatch
4 x 3 @ 60 kg

2 log lift (clean once)
Warm up
1 x some @ 46 kg (just pulls into the laps and cleans)
2 x some @ 46 kg
3-5 @ 76 kg
2 @ 86 kg
1 @ 96
1 @ 106

2 x 2 @ 113,5 kg - PR! (2,5 kg above my previous 1 rm)

Wanted 1 triple.
First set I got on my toes/ elbows dipped. I felt like I had the strength to do this, that’s why I tried a second time.

3 deadlift (power bar; beltless)
3 x 6 @ 165 kg

4 floor press
3 x 12 @ 95 kg - improvement over last time!

5 meadows rows
3 x 10 @ 35 kg

Notes:

  • strongman 101: Don’t kick your log. It hurts your foot. (Take note @alex_uk !)
  • I think I’m gonna put the belt on next week for these pulls.

It was actually a difference of 41,9°C in my city which beat a record that has been standing since 1880.

Regrettably, I’ve definitely taken some frustration out on the log, never ends well for the feet

Yeah I wrote it down this time in hopes I’ll remember it in the future… but let’s be realistic.

Oh btw. regarding our talk in here about straps. I asked my coach as well what his thoughts are on the matter.
Firstly he was a bit amused that I am the last guy on earth to hear about this trick.
Secondly he thinks it is a good tool to have in your bag for competition and is fine with me testing it out a bit. But he doesn’t want me to pull like this constantly. His premise is to make training harder in order to make the competition easier. He said I could do 2 of my 8 sets on Friday with the “Novikov” method and would like me to do all other deadlifts as usual/ with the longer rom.

Haha that’s hilarious, definitely been there before myself. Punching/kicking solid metal items never ends well. Fantastic work on the PR though, smashing it!

How do you rate the S/S log?

I stubbed my toe on a platform after dropping a barbell on my foot before. Luckily I was tired enough not to properly register the pain :joy:

Absolute garbage. Do not get one!!

Roger that thanks!

Not sure what makes a log good or bad, been looking at this:

I’m a while off pulling the trigger on any kit for a while yet anyway (money!) but just thinking ahead.

That looks solid. Things to look out for primarily are the right diameter (which in this case with 32 cm is pretty standard) and the cut outs (which are the reason the SS log sucks so much)

I’ve used one of those. They’re heavy. That’s my input.

If gyms ever reopen here, I can always find out anything you’d like to know.

50kg is decent but there are a lot of heavier logs out there. Which isn’t ideal in my opinion because warming up and strict pressing might turn into a hassle.

I am weak, so for me, 50kg counts as #goals. And probably pretty smart goals for myself.

You are well able to do a 50 kg log, mate

I wasn’t last time I tried. I suspect that’s probably still true.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but from the looks of it, cleaning and pressing a log seems significantly harder than cleaning and pressing a bb. The girth of the log seems so awkward!

Cleaning is more difficult than a barbell, but doable. The press is the bit I struggle with, personally. In that I can’t do it.
