People Blaming Your Supps/Nutrition

That’s fucked up.

I have issues sleeping, serious issues. Went down to a doctor by where my dad lives and got this Actiwatch thing that monitors movement, noise, and light to help determine what the problem may be. The doctor checked me out and of course my blood pressure, cholesterol, heart beat, everything was perfect. No sign of sleep apnea either. He’s thinking its a combination of psychological issues and perhaps restless leg syndrome.

I usually only bring protein bars with me to my dad’s but this time I brought my entire tub of Grow! - he saw me take a shake last night and then again this morning before I went back to my own place and he commented, “I notice you’re taking a lot of protein, maybe that’s why you can’t sleep at night.”

My dad is not at all healthy physically, I strongly wonder if he’s even all there mentally.

I also have RLS. I had a sleep study done as well and I “twitched at night” my Dr. wanted to get me this machine thing to help me sleep. Due to the cost I declined. With a lot of research online I found that most people who suffer RLS(restless leg syndrome) have zinc and magnesium deficiencies.(being the T-Nation fan I am, I remembered that ZMA has both these in them) I ordered some ZMA and have been taking it for about 2 months now and no longer twitch at night at all. (I know this because my wife has confirmed that she is not getting shook hit or kicked at night anymore) LOL…

Also my energy levels are way up. RLS is hard to deal with… Always feeling sleepy and run down… I remember those days its tough. If you cant afford ZMA there is a lot of magnesium in Cocoa (Dark chocolate) 70-100%.

Hope this helps

my current girlfriend actually has her own shaker, bought by me, and we drink shakes together. so she isnt worried about it. but my last girlfreind called everything from the vitamins i took to the creatine and protein ‘steroids’ and had many long talks with me about her worries about me working out.

It is annoying and I hide it now to save me the grief.

My response to this is crap is normally. Have you seen steroids? Then how do you know what the are? “normal response is some bullshit from sat morning specials” Then I say well the birth control pill is a steroid. “response is denial” Then I tell them the definition of a steroid and they look it up and see I am right and suddenly don’t have much to say. Then I finish them off by saying if you can’t even define the subject or word how do you know know what I am taking or if its even a steroid?

That ends the conversation right there. Or if they are superior dicks I never get into it.

Wow, I thought my mom was bad about my supplementation, but she never tried to flush my supplements down the toilet. This sounds like the bigging of a bad day!

You serious? That is shocking.

The comment I get most is that protein powder just can’t be good for you. Also all supplements are bad because they are not natural. This is said by people who smoke and eat junk food all day long, yet cannot work out why they are getting more out of shape every day.

Lol, admittedly during a contest prep, they have to stay on my high carb intake days,… but I always find a way to keep them around

Hey man get used to it, happend to me for at least the last 15 years from my family. As a practitioner I will tell you most liver problems are from infection ie Hep A,B,C and real medication ie Tylenol, Advil etc. One of the other major issues is of course liver cancer, not trying to scare you just give you facts. Tell your family that if you were going to have a problem from a high protien diet it would be to the kidneys (And this is actually up for debate).

As far as abnormal liver functions, are you on medications? Do you take a lot of over the counter meds. Are you a big guy (like overweight) How old are you?
well i had an ultrasound today and the doc said no tumors or cancers (thank god!) but he said my liver is big and i may have a fatty liver which can be caused by numerous things. I think its cos i upped my protein intake and lowered the carbs casuing alot of stress on my liver and my metabolism has SLOWED soo much in the last 2 years, i have read that metabolism problems can cause a fatty liver.
im 27,5’7" 200lbs ish, bit fat but not obese but i will be trying to lose weight from now. Dont have regular over the counter meds. Take omega 3 fish oil and take tribulus but i cycle this, once i finish a bottle i have roughly 2 months off then go again.

i think its congested so i may flush it out, but waiting to hear from my GP, will be really cleaning up my diet.

people still wind me up though, “all that shit cant be good for ya” my dad is very overweight and although he is alot more respectful and talks to me now rather than tells me he still says it. My Mrs is worried, but im trying to explain and it seems like she is not interested. this doc’s appointment cant come quick enough!

do any of you get it when if there is something medically wrong with you whether it be the common cold, sprain/strain, organ problems or whatever that normal general people blame it on your training and/or nutrition and supplementation?

whenever i have something wrong with me its always “that shit your taking” or its “see, all that training does you no good”

i have a problem with my liver lately, blood tests have come back abnormal so i am in the process of testing. My wife blamed it straight on protein powder (which i have 1 after training and sometimes as soon as i get up) when i think its too much protein and fat and my liver is congested. My dad said straight away, “its that powder” when the powder is probably the leanest form of protein i eat!

i know people are caring but when i feel i know more than these people and they are always quick to jump on things they know nothing about!!
Sorry just ranting
Not only do I get this all the time, I live a few stops up the district line from you. Good to see some east end on here.

another east londoner! you a hammer? i have moved out of that shit hole into a nice place up the road, but still in east london :o)

Yea your family loves you they just dont understand. If you were just eating Fast food and junk they would not even comment on your diet. It would be something else they would blame. If your US is clear and you just have a fatty liver, dont sweat it. Lab tests are not the be all to end all.

she was a social worker, so after they got done talking about drugs and all that stuff they talk about steroids and ephedra and all that. she was a paranoid girl. also, not i said ex girlfriend. i cant her them freaking out every time i wanna run a little clen/t3 thinking its some oral steroid just because you measure it in a syringe.

If anything, the tryptophan in the protein should be hydroxylated and then decarboxylated into serotonin - a neurotransmitter that makes you relaxed, somewhat sleepy and gives you a sense of wellbeing.

The nerve of some people.

I got dengue a couple of years ago and my mom blamed it on me not eating enough carbs.

that’s some good information. I’m picking up some zinc and magnesium tonight. I have rls and sometimes it almost feels like my hip and knee joints are itching and it wakes my up.

If you pick up Magnesium make sure you get magnesium aspartate not magnesium oxide.

Yep, happens to me all the time too.

One time a bus turned the corner as I was crossing the street and hit me…I flew about 20 feet in the air and slammed into a streetlight, bending in two, then I landed pretty hard on the street when another car ran over me, then reversed over me for some God forsaken reason…twice.
So I was left with a sprained ankle and my shirt was ripped up quite badly, but my girlfriend gave me no end of grief with “Why’d you sprain your ankle AND tear your shirt with all that lifting you do in the gym and all those silly protein shakes you drink?!?!”

I was told by a Chiropractor that the combination of the protein and creatine (~3g/day) I was consuming was potentially causing my hip problems, cue him snapping and cracking my back about 30 times and generally making me uncomfortable followed by treating my ‘tight IT Bands’ to cure the issue and and prescribing that I cut out the creatine for a while.
(he also told me fish oil was pointless)

All of which did nothing, 3 months later I discover I have a shit load of trigger points in my TFL that needed treating which he had completely missed and all it took was a £20 book off of amazon to work out.

Put me off ever going to a Chiro again.
