Pec Tear?

What’s up guys/gals. Today I thought it would be fun to test my 225 rep max on bench. I ramped up like usual to 245 never feeling a thing. When I dropped the weight back down to 225 I felt a slight tightness in my right pec toward my shoulder. When went for a ninth rep the tightness went to a rip/pop sensation coming out of the hole. It wasn’t a sharp pain, no pain at all really until afterwards. I’ve never had problems like this before so I don’t know what a pec tear or strain should feel like.

What should I do to get back on track as soon as possible. As of now I can’t pick anything heavy up with my right arm.

I can post the video if anyone would like.

Thanks.

Hey chazdaman.

I’ve got bad news man. You need to go to the doc asap. You may have ruptured your pectoralis major tendon. Hopefully, its just a tear to the muscle with limited damage to the tendon, but if you tore the tendon by 70% or more then the only way to fix it is through surgery. Do not lift at all or carry anything heavy, even if it starts feeling better, until you visit the doctor.

I’m recovering from a surgery to repair a ruptured pec major tendon as we speak, and trust me, it’s no picnic. Fortunately, recovery tends to be pretty good, if you do need surgery but it takes 12-18 months to get back to your normal strength levels.

Good luck man.

PS If you post a pic, I can tell very easily if you ruptured the tendon, because there will be a dent under your armpit wear the tendon used to come across. You can also just check google images and compare it to yours if you like. It’s very easy to tell. If there’s no dent, you may have just torn the muscle (hopefully).

Have your doc check your shoulder too, to make sure you didn’t tear your rotator cuff and also your biceps.

Thanks man. I do believe it is only a muscle tear though because there is no dent. As of now I don’t have any insurance, but I’m about to get a job that offers it so as soon as that happens I’ll take a trip to the doc.

It’s been a week and I’m still not able to do a full push-up but can do light weight DB presses. Doing a dip would kill me pullups and chins hurt too.

I can horizontal pulls and shoulder stuff, just nothing vertical.

Thanks for the reply.

I ruptured my pec tendon about three years ago. A full or partial rupture should produce a huge black and blue, and the muscle would physically “look” different, i.e., anatomically, you should be able to tell something is amiss.

Yea it never turned any colors. Should I go see a doc about it though. I know it’d be the safe thing to do but is it necessary. I’ve been VERY lightweight stuff with it to slowly work it back in and keep blood flow to the area.

The only thing a doctor is going to tell you is to get an MRI. That’s the only definitive way to know whether the tendon is torn, frayed, etc. I re-read your post, and if you heard a rip or a pop, it may be a tear. I completely ruptured mine, and felt nearly no pain. The MRI will not be cheap, but I would do it. If you need surgery, the longer you wait, the worse the prognosis is for total recovery.
