I started weight lifting again today and as I was trying to find my 1RM for Bench Press I felt this awful popping almost like a tearing go through my chest and shoulder. It actually did not hurt that much as it happened, but my muscles tightened up very quickly after that. I asked my spotter if my form looked bad and he said that my form actually looked really good and was surprised that I had injured myself. The pain is dull, almost feels like a major cramp, and it’s right around my armpit; it almost seems like where the Pec and Deltoid meet. I can lift my elbows over my shoulder right now with just a little discomfort and am icing as well as taken 4 Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.
Anybody else experience this or have an idea of what it might be? Is it serious? I want to go back to tomorrow and finish finding my 1RM’s but I’m not sure if I should or not. Any recommendations on treatment or regardng skipping training, etc would be great.
Could be a few issues here. First, get assesed asnd regular treatment by someone in your area who is familar with weight training and power athletes that has a background in Active Release Therapy or Graston.
The problem with the area that you are describing is there is multiple important muscles and tissues that are all strong primary movers crossing the joint. One thing it sounds like is a Long Head Bicep Tendon Issue.
What motions are painful?
Start to talk 8 grams of fish oil, split throughout the day, and start to take Arnica tablets, 3 tablets of 30cc, 3x/day.

Would that be a Chriopractor? It’s interesting that you said the long head of the bicep because there is a slight twinge towards the top (closest to the deltoid), but the majority of the pain is still around the edge of the pectoral and what seems to be the deltoid but perhaps it is the biceps.
RE Pain Motions: Well first, I can’t support too much of my weight on my left side. I tried getting into a push-up position and it was quite uncomfortable. Moving my arm in a lat raise type motion or straight in-front of me doesn’t hurt much, it’s more tightness and discomfort that what I would call pain. But I do feel a weird pulling and something that feels like a popping. I don’t think it’s tearing or anything because that pain is quite different and I believe I’d see some bruising by now, 10 hours later.
This is so frustrating because i was really pumped about getting back into the gym and no I’m sidelined.
Today I found a Sport Medical doctor; I didn’t realize that my son had been to one in the past. I have small bruise on my upper bicep, which is very close to some of the discomfort but doesn’t explain the pain in my pectoral. Does the bruise mean a torn muscle or could it mean something else?
i had the same injury in november. doing 5x5 on bench. 225/225/235/245/245. last set of 245 on the 3rd rep, on the way odown about 3-5 inches off my chest is sounded like ripping paper. spotter grabbed the weight, instantly bruised. spent 3 weeks in sling, and 3 months of no chest exercises. not even pushups.
doc told me it was a tear of the pec minor. but i dont know how accurate that diagnosis is. it hurt in the same place your decribing. the armpit area, right where the pec meets shoulder.
heat rub and STRETCH multiple times a day. stretching is what helped me for sure

I met with a Sports Medicine doctor today; he’s the trainer for UNLV’s football team so I’m assuming he’s pretty good. He said I have a partial pectoral tear and he’s setting me up for an MRI to determine the extent of the damage. Based on what he was feeling around my pain level he only believes it to be a partial tear and if that proves to be true I could be healed up in six-weeks. At first he saw my bruising and thought it was the bicep but he felt some very distinct differences between my right side and left side and it seemed pretty obvious to him.
I’m like you, I can get in push-up position but I can’t do a single push-up. I want to get back into the gym and do whatever exercises I can without irritating the problem. It seems like I can do some back work but chin-ups so far. Possibly some shoulder work and definitely some leg work. Hopefully I can or I will go stir crazy; I’m already pissed off that my strength is at a good level relative to me and now I’m going to lose strength for sure.
This just happened to me. That area has been tight for the past few weeks, but it just felt like it ripped today. How long should I wait before going to see a Sports Medicine doctor?
