Just thought I’d start this string. I just got some books so I’d like to hear from people who have been using his concepts for awhile and your results.
As far as Pavel’s writings on strength are concerned he is right on the money. Soviet and Bulgarian lifters absolutely do NOT believe in overtraining. I have personally talked to one Bulgar and everything he said about training is, believe it or not, even more intense than Pavel’s advice (the Party is always right!). So go ahead and lift heavy, lift frequently and dont let soreness be a factor in your workouts. As far as what Pavel says about getting big, I don’t know. Never tried any program similar to his with regards to mass. Best wishes.
I’ve incorporated bits and pieces of things that Pavel recommends. I have his “Power to the People” book and recently purchased a kettlebell and the Kettlebell Challenge video and book. The video is pretty cool. I’m still waiting for the book. I’m enjoying the kettlebell stuff. And I agree, Pavel knows his stuff when it comes to strength. But I have yet to try a routine using all his methods. It would be interested to know of others that have used his methods in their training.
Nate dogg, how do you cycle your workouts with Pavel’s stuff? I do like his strength training ideas and can see right away how his PTP program would benefit martial arts, but when I want to add muscle, I would use a more traditional routine. I’m just curious how often I should cycle between the two.
I’m incorporating Pavel’s kettlebell work into my training right now. I’m mixing that with some Renegade training on my “off” days from the weights. So I pretty much do that on Tues, Thurs and Sat.
Pavel’s stuff is great and I have been doing his kettlebell program for about two months now. I enjoy the one arm snatches, cleans, and side presses and can see clearly how they would be beneficial to martial artists and other athletes. Pavel’s Kv video is a must have for anyone trying KB training and I just received his KB book which is very cool as well.
“Power to the people” is a cool book and I did the program for a while. However, just doing deadlifts and side presses gets boring real fast. I am currently alternating KB training with Matt Furey’s CC. I do CC for 2-3 weeks exclusively and then KB for 2-3 weeks exclusively. Just started doing this so I have no real feedback yet.
Pavel’s stretching book is pretty good as well and Janda situps are hard as hell and really hit your abs. Good stuff
Anybody know about the push-up routine that he wrote for MM2K in Jly/August. Friend of mine tried explaining it to me. Sounds interesting but I don’t read the mag so I don’t know what it’s about. Can anyone fill me in.
I think Pavel’s got it goin on. I really like his attitude about functional strength. Also really like his books on stretching.
Thanks Mike and Nate again. I could see Deadlifts and side presses everyday getting boring, even if it’s only 2 sets of 5. But for some strength, I will do that for awhile. Once I save up a bit I will invest in KBs, but for now, an Olympic set of weights is like $90 at Modells. Thanks again. And to Tommy, I don’t know if they have it posted at MM’s website, but you can probably back order the mag if you’re really interested in the pushup program.
Tommy, someone posted the pushup routine on the forum a few weeks ago. Do a search under the subject for “Pavel’s pushup routine.” I can’t remember who posted it. Could have been FFB or TEK. Can’t remember, but I did see it!
Good lookin out Nate Dogg. I found it. Thanks
Pavel’s stuff has done wonders for me. I could never get my calfs to grow. I tried everything, including the much-touted Poloquin routine that was posted. But when I started following Pavel’s advice and doing multiple heavy sets of 5 reps, they finally started to grow.
