Hi…I am starting a new program trying to gain lean mass. I’d say I’m still sort of a beginner…I’ve lifted for a while but I still can’t lift very heavy and I’ve kind of been going in circles without gaining much strength. I tend to always want to do more!!
Would people recommend OVT or something full body like TBT or Waterbury method? I like the feeling of really demolishing a body part like you get in OVT, but then I wonder too about waiting a whole week to redo the body part…
I read somewhere a coach mentioned that usually beginners just mentally aren’t able to fully stimulate muscles enough in one workout to wait a full week and that is why it is better to go more frequent/less volume per workout. But Waterbury method seems to have so few exercises! Has anyone had good success with that?

I’ve tried both programs. I’ve seen better results with the Waterbury Method. I tried them months apart (i.e. I did OVT first). At both times I was a beginner, but when I did the Waterbury Method I started eating BIG!
Don’t mind the few exercises the Waterbury Method has. When you actually do a day of the Waterbury Method, you’ll be glad he put only a few.
Where ever you heard that line from the coach, I think he may be on to something.
If you can handle the high intensity of OVT, then go for it. But not everyone is a fast-twitch dominant freak, so that program will most likely overtrain the underfed and genetically soft.
Waterbury’s programs are great because he leaves alot up to the user, and gains can be made regardless of ones experience, it all depends on how much effort you put into it.
Thanks for the responses. For those of you who did Waturbury Method - how did you pick the starting weight? Did you pick something a little lower so that you could definitely increase the subsequent weeks? Also, did you really only use 6 rm for the 10 sets of 3? If that is the case is the last set of 3 supposed to still not be nearing failure?
