tonight i worked up to a BW overhead military press…got 10 dead stop reps. i also did some reverse grip military pressing. haven’t done them standing before. i do them a lot as a bench press variation.
Woa. Marauder, you’re one strong man. Impressive work.
Using my belt like I do for a normal military press(i.e. deep breath, push abs forward against the belt) made me fall backwards when pressing the bar. I found this lift next to impossible to do while wearing a belt.
This lift seems to be rear and lateral delt dominant, as you can’t really lean back and use your front delts to power the weight up. I like this, as my rear delts could always use more work.
3.Does anybody else get severe quad cramps when perfomring this lift? Maybe I just did not realize how much I tighten my lower body for all my other presses, who knows.
Texag, you asked 5 pages back I think, but I lift at Metroflex Mid Cities in Euless next to DFW airport.
Dove, hey when i push up the bar i just tighten my abs ok. I am doing this so to protect my lower back and yeah i feel sore the next day in my legs hips and butt… I take a shoulder width stance… some times I lift from the floor and some times from a rack, but from the shoulder width stance i push the bar up very close to my face and I have to bring my head back or else i would hit my nose, then when the bar passes my nose i push straight over my head around my ears, and I go to full lock out.
I’ve seen guys push the bar with a very wide hand position, this is i think a shorten range and I think this would actually hurt or injury my shoulders faster than any thing…
I m trying to get pass my best press but every time i try to pass it i get injured so this time i am going to work up to 95% of my 1 rep max and then come back down in the following workout for pressing at a lower % and then after a few weeks or so run back up at it… Its all experimentation… Do you have any other exercises that help your pressing?

How did the reverse grip hit you?
it really targets the medial head of the delts and triceps big time.

Interesting thoughts and I agree with you likewise we could all use more rear delt work.
Also yeah I can’t use a belt for this lift at all.
I keep my feet straight out i brace my abs and flex my lats and do my best to keep my upper body as straight as possible. Never gotten a quad cramp

This is a great thread. The overhead press is an awesome lift. I usually keep my overhead press sets to low reps to keep good form and work on being explosive, but I started training with a 5/3/1 template and did a 10 rep set. Thought I’d join the fun and post. If anyone wants to comment on my form though, I’d appreciate. I’m not sure I’m leaning back too much on the later reps.
missed 275 on log press again Sunday lol didn’t mean to go for it but was training with a different group and these things happen. Backed down and hit 205x10 for a pr
I went easy Monday, saving up for Wednesday, aka z-press day. Did 1 arm DB snatch, front squats (ended up deadlifting in between sets), some standing French curls and isometric z-press at my stick pt.

Nice!
You stole my idea. I was thinking largest dimensional object for February’s chall(challenge)enge. i.e., challenge within a challenge. Excluding empty cardboard boxes, of course.
We can all vote this weekend once everyone posts video.

I tried a bodyweight z-press and narrowly missed it after I did my normal pressing.
Good effort and well fought.
I think the z-press could get its own day. I did find that squatting heavy singles between sets prepped my body for the lift. Plyo push-ups were actually counter-productive. It could be from all the C&PP I do, legs then shoulders.
