Overhead Press Challenge Thread

Here’s a PB-tying clean and jerk I hit today, 175kg (about 385) at a bodyweight of around 241 if the scale at this gym was accurate. Also included in the video is me flubbing the clean at 180kg (about 396) twice. That’s 10kg more than I posted about 10-15 pages back in this thread, amazing what a little extra Christmas weight will do.

Goodness! Nice work Jonty.

Nice! I’m going to rewatch your video when I do jerks tomorrow.

Nice job!

I have gained no advantage from my Xmas cookie pudge, I guess I was doing it wrong.

For those doing the z-press I found that.setting up so the bar is under my chin got me in a position where I could be more explosive off the pins. Do not forget to get your chin out of the way. I found getting my head through was more automatic from this position as.well.

Kalle - do we care about using elbow wraps? Not sure I do, will try them next week. I am of the attitude that I just want to see them done.

I prefer to press off fat-grips so I will he using those.
They are inzer sleeves they have a velcro strap so they are kind of in between wraps and sleeves. Interested to see if using the wrist wraps helps you out
wraps or sleeves? I dont really care I use my inzer sleeves for a lot of pressing
What’s around your elbows in the vids? I have wrist wraps, figure they would work on elbows. I have a nasty stick point that would be nice to move through more quickly.

You don’t say.

Tried the z-press for the first time last night. How humbling. I’ve never done them before, but this talk of bodyweight as a goal got me curious. I was fairly confident I would at least get close to my bodyweight of 205. I was wrong. I hit 175 and failed falling backwards on 185. I have videos of both, but I’m having posting issues.

I like these. I might keep these in rotation for a while.
I think these make a very good challenge, they demand a strict form and the weights are reasonable. So are you in for the challenge?

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! debraD’s sots (or whatever she calls them) presses will be an upcoming challenge within a challenge. Probably not for a few months so you have time to practice, I figure we could all use the mobility work.

So, debs, keep us motivated.

On another note: Anybody interested in trying one-arm barbell snatches?

What exactly is the challenge? I have until the 28th to hit body weight? Doesn’t matter. Whatever it is, I’m in.

I’d be down.

Good session today… lots of clean and push presses. Topped out at 255x1. That’s a 10b PR. I think I can do better, but this is my 4th time push pressing this week and I wanted to have some mercy on the CNS lol.

Cool. Guess I need to learn how to do it. I figure it is much like using a dumbbell but harder, so much harder.

Feel free to post a vid so we can see how it is done.

Let me be the first to say…STRAPS?

It strikes me if you worked on cleans more, and turned that into more of a push press you could move some serious weight. Not that that weight was not serious, but if it was at a poker game it might bluff a couple of times, but with practice, your weight would be going all in on the first hand.

Haha I know, I know. I can clean without the straps (actually done a good bit of it). I’m currently working on a plan that is built around high frequency strength work (learned that from a program that Christian Thibaudeau put me on through the Indigo Project), and so I’m hitting at least one OHP variation and power snatching every day I work with weights (4 times this week).

The straps are in just to help manage neural fatigue. I’m doing some kind of workout 5-6 days a week, so I need to be careful about making sure I’m working activation more than fatigue so I don’t cross into the overtraining zone. This was just a plain old workout, not a crazy max test or anything. Next time I throw in a full-on max day and have a couple of recovery days planned following it, I’ll ditch the straps and get a vid of that.

One question though… are you saying that I have too much leg drive or not enough in the push press? Or is something else a bit screwy with my form? I’ve only been push pressing for like half a year so if you have any pointers on that then I’d love to hear them.

Would this one be after the Deb press challenge? And I would also need to see a vid too.

I need the meme with the Back up Internet Bad Ass changed to Watch Out Indigo Bad Ass for this post. Alas, I do not have it.

You went up on your toes which probably means you are pushing too far in front rather than straight over your head. I am parroting tips given to me earlier in this thread. My leg portion of my push press sucks. PB Andy posted some great stuff. I found toes out helps me stay on my heals and have started doing 1.5 reps (full down to up the halfway down the up) of front squats with chains to work on my explosion for the push. These suck.

By how quickly you got the weight up I just see you pulling and pressing a hell of a lot more.

EDIT: check page 4 & 8

I would like to see videos of either rolling in. The bw z-press challenge made a good timed challenge. The sots and one hand snatch would just be awesome to see. We have seen a waitress and a tire OHP’d this thread, there is room for more interesting things over the head.

What would you like to see as a challenge?

gimme a few weeks, Ag - had a few challenges lately, and my training has slipped off the radar.
I am hoping to have something post-worthy by the first part of January -
If anyone sees Edgy, tell him we are waiting…

tomorrow is my overhead press day. i’ll be giving the z press a try. i’ll get a vid.
