Overcome

I hear the jacket is good training because the techniques are harder when you have the gi on. It seems like leg locks are tough to pull off on people who know some of the fundamentals but the leg submissions are badass.

My instructor mixes it up for the MMA classes. Sometimes we might focus on the transitions from standing to ground or he devotes an entire class to either standup or ground work. It all depends on what he has in mind.

Question…my MMA gym offers morning and evening classes and my private boxing trainer offers only morning training sessions, do you think it is better to lift an hour before boxing training or should I lift at night when I am boxing in the morning?

I lift before training on wed, I don’t do a ton of volume.

Hello all. I found this forum googling nyc combat sambo. Read this entire thread. Love it.

Anyway- I currently work law enforcement and am on the market for a self defense school. I attend cko kickboxing (dont laugh, its strickly for cardio lol).

Muay thai, bjj, judo, combat sambo and MMA are what Im looking for. Looking for school(s) that will cost me $250 or less a month. The schools im looking at right now are

Nyccombat sambo
Sitan
5 points
Ronin athletics
Workshop bjj (would take both bjj and MT)
C1mma
Marcelo bjj

Anyone have experience with these schools? Right now the best bang for my buck is 5 points: Cheap with my Law enforcement discount, offers judo, MT, gym and unlimited classes… Im just concerned with the type of training they offer as compared with a place like SITAN.

Krazy larry- i see that you train with sambo steve. Does he teach all of the classes? How are his instructors? Are there any classes that focus on striking? Where do you train muay thai if you dont mind me asking. Im not looking to compete. Just looking to train for self defense and hit the open mat to test my skills.

Well anything will add to self defense. So I will talk more about the sport aspect because that is a more object view, comparing instructors, gym, ect.

NYC sambo, I trained here for many years, and still go down when I can. Which is not often as I work 7 days a week in westchester and live in the BX. Steve is awesome, no he doesnt teach all the classes, there are a wrestling coach Tyga, judo Phoneix, another MMA coach Tony. School is a small almost private type gym, everyone is nice.

Sitan, is really just MT, same with 5 points. Add church street, kings, and the Wat to this too, all very good gyms, but you are just getting MT.

As for Ronin and workshop, not impressed with their coaching. Most seem to be amateurs. Hell workshop doesn’t even list their MT coach.

Cimma, couldnt find anything on them on the net.

Marcelo’s is like Renzo’s, great grappling and bjj, but just that. Renzo’s is also over 300.

None of these places are true MMA gyms.

If you can make it to new rochelle, westchester fight club is the best place to be. Its where I do 99% of my training, they have a true MT kru, 50+ pro fights, a true black belt bbj coach, GSP paid him to come train with him for the Alves fight, boxing coach, undefeated pro, MMA coach, fought in the UFC, and a strength and conditioning guy, all wrapped up in a nicer gym than any of these other places.

So in short, NY combat sambo is my pick if it has to be Manhattan, WFC if you can make westchester.
