I was perusing my pantry this weekend, while being snow bound, looking for somthing halfway decent to eat and I noticed something. There are a lot of things that have a category Other Carbs underneath the Carbs section. What constitutes Other Carbs? Are these something that need to be taken in to count? Or are they digestable?
They also frequently list glycerine (sugar alcohols) as other carbs. I think some companies have jumped on the bandwagon anticipating the FDA will force them to report the amount of glycerin/glycerol in their product rather than just account for the calories from them.
ChuckieT hit the nail on the head. Other Carbs has started showing up on alot of things including protein bars. I noticed it on cereal. Was not sure what it was but I guess the idea that it is any carb other than sugar makes sense. I was not sure whether they were usable carbs or not.
Now if I understand this correctly are we to subtract the fiber grams from the total carb number to figure out the grams we are concerned about avaoiding
Neato & greekdawg, you’re dead on re the fiber. Subtract fiber from total carbs to get the number you track on a daily basis. Fiber (soluble and insoluble, both) has no calories and doesn’t affect blood sugar.
