I have been reading all of the old posts about T-men from Orlando on here. I’m moving to Winter Park in the fall to attend art school after I graduate from MSU. I won’t be living too far from the University of Central Florida while I’m down there. Can anyone recommend a good gym? Also, what can I expect for prices? I know that people from southern California say that good gyms are really cheap down there, is Florida the same way? (A decent gym here runs $350 or more usually.)

I’m paying about $35 per month for a World Gym membership. There are two WGs near UCF, and the same guy owns both, so he lets members go to either one. The one north of UCF gets a lot of frat boys who don’t know shit about lifting, but there are a few serious looking dudes there too. There are no stupid rules there, and they have pretty much all the equipment I think you might want. I have seen very few annoying people there, and nobody gives me shit.
There's also a "Y" near UCF, but its much more expensive and is all cardio oriented. On the other hand, it has tennis and basketball courts and a swimming pool too.
Finally, there's also a Lord's Gym south of UCF, which promises fitness for the body and immortal soul if you're into that.
I suspect there are a few hard core gyms around, but I'm just a beginner, so I couldn't tell you where in Orlando they are.Hey, i’m at Msu too. Thats cool.
Thanks a lot Yorik. I don’t give a hoot about cardio equipment (shit, it’s Florida, isn’t it? Can’t you just, well, go outside if you want to run around and do cardio?). It sounds like the World’s Gyms may be my best bet. I’m going to be in Orlando on March 1-5, I will definitely go check them out. If you see an extremely white 230 lb. bearded red-haired guy in there throwing some weight around, that would be me. Your help is much appreciated.
Shane, you go to Michigan State? Where do you train?
Just to let you know, in the middle of summer with temperatures in the 90’s and 85% humidity, you do NOT just go outside and run around Orlando. Winter? OK. Summer? No way. Be forewarned.
I go to a place called Cardio Club. Gay name right? Well, they have brand new equipment since they opened almost 1 year ago. Ground Zero machines as well as Hammer Strength and Magnum. Majority of people are in cardio classes which mean easy access to all the weights. It’s expensive though. Check out Gold’s gyms near UCF. Also, the Steel Mill Gym is pretty hard core.
Again, thanks for the input Yorik. I didn’t even think about that. I am NOT looking forward to the summers down there – I am a redhead and can last about 10 minutes in the sun unprotected without becoming an enormous melanoma. Fortunately, the art school (Full Sail) that I am going to has weird hours, so hopefully I can lift at night or early morning and avoid the sun whenever possible. That’s right, I am a weightlifting troll. I don’t engage in much cardio anyways.
JD, the Steel Mill gym? That sounds promising.
Full Sail, huh? World Gym/Winter Park is about 2 blocks east of Full Sail on the same street. I haven’t been there, since I do WG/Oviedo north of UCF.
I noticed that nobody even bothered to mention the Bally's in the area. ('nuff said.)
