So I know a lot of members here have worked with various coaches for diet and nutrition and I thought it would be useful if people wrote about their experiences so that others can get idea of different styles and who they might want to work with.
My personal suggestion would be to talk about general style, availability (ie response time), value (not cost but was it worth the cost), flexibility in scheduling etc… Without giving away the persons entire playbook.
My brother is doing VERY good with Stu. He can be a pain in the ass with amount and repetition of questions, so I assume Stu has he patience and generosity of a saint.
Shelby is pretty much the bomb when it comes to responding to emails quickly- people in the past said that he tends to be a bit stoic with his clients, but that didnt seem to be a problem with me at all. I also really like Shelby’s system of tracking macros—no other approach is that easy to follow
i also worked with derek charlebois for 7 weeks when i started dieting, but to be honest i wasnt a big fan of his methods–i knew using his program i wouldnt get shredded enough for a bbing contest considering i started fat as hell. he wouldnt really let me lose more than a 1.5 lbs a week. (this is a good rate if you only need to lose 20 lbs to be in shape, but if you start out behind, its not going to cut it). I also think for bodybuilding clients he focusses to much on the “big three” lifts.

Shelby is awesome… it’s great working with him in the offseason
im actually making very noticeable progress week after week…
before him it kinda felt like I was just trying to suck my own dick all day

Does he have you doing any cardio offseason? I’m cutting with him right now and debating sampling someone else vs. working with him to add mass. Though honestly the only reason I’d use someone else right now would just be to see another style, I’m liking the results 8 weeks in so far.

I’m working with him right now for a cut and debating whether to work with him for lean gains or to try someone else. The cuts gone well so far the only reason I’d try someone else would just be to see another style.

he and JM has a group deal, if you use JM for training and Shelby for diet u get 20% of both their packages

Definitely agree about his system with macros, he’s been great to work with so far. He’s got me doing a fair amount of steady state, but the only complaint there is the risk of dying of boredom.
He’s definitely not long winded, and I could see people without a fair amount of intrinsic motivation having trouble with his style…On the other hand he wicked fast answering questions. really liked the experience with him so far.

i agree, people who sign up for coaching need to realize that you are basically paying them just for guidance and 100 percent of the work is up to you…you still need to be your own coach to some extent.

I use Alex Azarian for coaching. Nice guy and great value. Diet is very tolerable and works. Big believer in cardio both during prep and offseason. He believes in “looking like you could compete” year round, which really changed my views and attitude towards diet and training overall.

John Meadows is in charge of my diet plan at the moment and helping get my metabolism back to where it should be (it tanked after too long, too low - even at 1800 calories I wasn’t losing any fat, just feeling like crap). I’ve definitely seen body recomp that I’m happy with, even though I’m not the ideal client due to my work schedule and the amount of travelling I tend to do.
Would definitely recommend John - he answers emails pretty quickly, especially taking into account the time difference (I’m in Kuwait) but he also comes across as an extremely nice guy.
Would you guys recommend hiring a coach to someone who isn’t necessarily looking to compete (in the immediate future), but is just trying to gain 10-15 pounds of relatively lean mass?

If you can easily afford it, yes
you could work with that coach to add some size then diet with them, that way they would really get to know how you respond to diet and training stimulus

This sounds familiar. What (in general) is he doing to restart your metabolism? I know you probably can’t give away trade secrets, but generally?
