Anyone ever see people do these in the gym? How beneficial are they? Lifting on the side of the body…

According to this expert, “these are challenging but fun, balancing is very tough, it really helps to use a solid grip”
And, “great grip and stability workout”
Hope my excellent google’ing and youtube’ing has helped.
…Seriously though I know nothing of this exercise variant and I don’t see any potential in its use(for my goals).
I imagine it is much harder to balance when the bar is across your body, ie. first video, than when the bar is perpendicular to your body, ie. second video.
The second variant (barbell perpendicular to the body) is also known as the Javelin press. If I recall correctly, Thibs recommends it for use in his HSS-100 shoulder specialization.
i do them, standing not sitting.
they are very challenging, great strength exercise, real old school that you don’t see much done any more.
I know that in “Power to the People” by Pavel, these are the only upper body work he advocates. These and deadlifts are the workout.
I’ve done them, and if you don’t have the bar balanced just right, you’ll know right away.
They helped me learn how to engage my lats into my single arm overhead pressing, especially when going back to kettlebells. Also gave a little boost in grip strength, mostly with wrist rotation (or anti-rotation I guess). They have their place, but I prefer to get both hands on the bar and go heavy.
