One-Arm Chin-Up Statistics

Hi guys

Long time reader, never really posted… just managed my first true one arm chin today (yeh!), and I was wondering if anyone knew the statistics about what % of the population could pull it off.

It’s really not to gloat or anything, but I remember hearing about it being one person in 100,000 (general population) in a documentary about rock climber legend Alain Robert (a.k.a. Spider-Man), in which you see him doing a couple.

I find the number a wee bit big, any thoughts ?

How much do you weigh?

Do you know how much extra weight you can do with a 2-armed chinup?

Sorry, but I can’t answer any of your questions.

I very much doubt that there are any reliable statistics on what percentage of the general population can pull off a one arm chin-up. The actual number would be fairly meaningless though as very few people actually train for it.

Just to clarify, I am assuming that you were not holding onto the wrist of your chinning arm with your non chinning arm? The reason I say this is because many people don’t seem to understand the difference between a 1 arm chin and a 1 hand chin.

If you actually did do a legit one arm chin then that is extremely impressive.

i read once that it was some ridiculously small percentage of people who had the genetic capability to do it. but i think that’s total bullshit, you can find videos of random kids in new york city doing them, cuz they do pullups all the time and weigh a buck 25. with low bodyweight and dedicated training i think most healthy males could pull it off, but in terms of who actually CAN do one at a given time it’s probably a ridiculously small percentage of people.

no cheating, this guy does it with each hand. doesn’t look like he’s juicing or pounding the protein powder either, could be wrong of course

The question is…how many chins can you do with an extra 100lb?

Pounding the protein powder? Yuck.

Hi guys,

28 yo, been training for 6 years, 5’6" and in a major cutting phase, from 170 to 142, BF must be around 10%. Honestly everyone is shocked when I (admit) my low weight… which I try not to worry about until I get near 8%. Kinda like CT said… no point in keeping the bw up when it’s fat huh ? I’m fairly sure the low bw helps like crazy.

Yes, it is a one-ARM chin-up, not one hand chin… and yes, I agree many people do not understand the difference…and a world of difference it is !!

I can chin with 100lbs for 6 reps, and for pulls I usually easily pull 25-30 reps, where I actually push myself on the way down since only gravity is too slow to producing a good workout. I usually attach a 45lbs for pulls and manage 8-10, but then again the plate usually swings all over the place since my pulls have my legs a 90degrees.

Anyway, like I said, this was not to gloat, I was just wondering if anyone heard a stat about that…

thanks

Nice.

What are you’re other lifts?

some recent lifts, slight caloric deficit, but still seeing some gain on Waterbury Total Body Training…

at bw 140lbs

some of my good lifts I think! ; )

Preacher curl 5 rep (parrallel) : 132lbs
Dumbell curl 6 reps : 55lbs X2
Dumbell press 5 rep : 95 lbs X2
Dips (below parrallel) 6 reps : 105lbs attached

Bench 1RM is probably around 250-260 lbs, which should probably be a bit more

Now I know I know…but it is true that I’ve got good leg genes and I don’t really need to train them hard and still have a proportionate appearance. I’m the guy with naturally big calves for my size.

Full Back Squat is a puny 205lbs

Deadlift: 300lbs X 4 reps

that’s about it. I can back anything with vids lol… although not the bench since I’ve never attempted the 1RM

anyway thanks for the info !

Interesting, since I’m a similar size to you.

I’m on par with you squat and deads but then again they have little to do with chinning.

Umm, not to be a dick, but what IS your tested highest bench?
Do you focus on curls or something?
How’d you train for the 1 arm chin?

I can only do 1-hand chins. Been wanting to do a 1arm chin…

Honestly I wanted to do a one arm chin for a long time, but haven’t really trained for it. Last time I tested it 2 months ago I couldn’t move very much, but this week it just worked by magic! Hard, but surprisingly fluid.

Don’t really focus on curls, although my bi/tri are a strong point of mine. The max bench hasn’t been tested since I train alone and don’t really have a good spotter on hand…and because I don’t really worry about the exact number… ; )

I always do at least 25 pulls at bodyweight with legs at 90d before each workout. I don’t want to lose the skill and I get my heart pumping pretty quickly.

Hope that helps! beastskills.com has some good articles about OAC’s

train legs more?

Rock Climbers are something different.
Many of the elite ones CAN do them, but they don’t train specifically for strength.

So while some Tguys here think of strategies how to achieve them, how extra training might fit between arm day and back day and which underdeveloped muscles might be a weak link, climbers just train. They don’t stop after a “set”, shake out their arms and drink some water(OK, perhaps they might do this while supporting themselves with one arm and one leg) .
Many actually do their pullups and even some handstand pushups directly BEFORE a parcour.

If you climb religiously nearly every day, do dozens of daily pullups while being very thin, chances are you’ll achieve the OAPU.

Oh, and, congrats, relentless!

Thanks! Just tried it yesterday and it’s still on… yey ! ; )

some rock climbers have done 1 pinkie pull ups, I don’t think one arm is too hard for people who are light and train for it.
